On December 6, 2021, Patricia Mercedes (Dick) DuMond passed away peacefully in her home at StoneRidge in Mystic, Connecticut. Patricia spent over a dozen happy and active years in StoneRidge; and towards the end of her life she was provided with compassionate and outstanding care. She was 93 years old.
Patricia was born at Mercedes Catholic Hospital in Brownsville, Texas and was raised in Miami, Florida. She attended the University of Miami where she met her husband, Joseph X. DuMond. They moved to from Miami to Grassy Hill Road in Lyme, Connecticut in 1972, where they built a home on the familial land of Joseph’s grandparents, the American Impressionist Artists Frank Vincent and Helen Savier DuMond. Patricia grew to love everything about Lyme: her neighbors, the artists, the Congregational Church at the top of Grassy Hill, and the beauty of the land, including its meadows, thick forests, and lakes.
Patricia was active in civic affairs: she served as a Registrar of Voters in Lyme and was a member of the Grassy Hill Congregational Church and the Lyme Garden Club. Her favorite volunteer role was as a Docent at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme. She also had a career in banking and retail. However, family and faith were the primary focus of her life and she will be greatly missed by her loving family.
Patricia was preceded in death by her husband Joseph X. DuMond, a former Connecticut Assistant Attorney General and Miami City Commissioner; her parents, Alfred and Melba C. Dick; two siblings, Melba Jean Dick and Alfred Dick; and great-granddaughter, Lydia Zelek.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Smogar of Miami, FL, and brother, Charles Dick and wife Diane of Panama City, FL; her five beloved children: Joseph Peterson of New London, CT, Charles V. DuMond and wife Mary Ruggiero of Cambridge, MA, Reverend James X. DuMond and wife Alice of Greeneville, TN, Andrea M. DuMond of New London, CT, and Douglas L. DuMond and wife Marcia of Darien, CT.
She was also blessed with five grandchildren: Jennifer DuMond Zelek and husband Aaron of Raleigh, NC, Christine H. DuMond of Austin, TX, Isabella R. DuMond of Cambridge, MA, Alexander DuMond of Paris, France, Andrew C. DuMond of Darien, CT; and her great-granddaughter: Charlotte Zelek of Raleigh, NC; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service for Patricia DuMond will be held at the Grassy Hill Congregational Church in Lyme, CT on Sunday January 2, 2022 at 2:00 pm. Reverend Alan Scott will be officiating. There will be reception immediately following the service from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Florence Griswold Museum, 96 Lyme, Street, Old Lyme, Connecticut.
