Robert Louis Smith

Bob Smith, 70, of Mile Creek Rd., Old Lyme, passed away at home on October 29, 2017. Born in Providence, RI on July 13, 1947, he was the son of the late Louis and Margaret Smith. He was a graduate of Providence College in 1969 and served honorably in the CT Army National Guard from 1970 to 1975. He served in the Old Lyme Police Department during the summers of 1967 to 1972. It was during this time he gave himself deeply to the love of his life, Edyse (Katz) Smith, who he married on June 30, 1971. Bob was a decent, caring human being with a basic goodness in his heart. He was a hard working man and was dedicated to his roles at Viking and Whaling City Ford for 17 years, self-employed for Sentinel Cleaning Services for 10 years, and at the Comfort Inn for 20 years.

Besides his wife, Bob is survived by his daughters Robin Smith and her fiancé Ben Edwin of Danielson and Jody Smith and his granddaughters Rebecca and Julia of Waterford. He was also the oldest brother to Patricia Boyle of Old Lyme, Dan Smith and Diane of Key Largo, FL, Richard Smith and Kathy Pickett of Niantic, and Steven Smith of Old Lyme. He was a loving uncle to many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, a brother-in-law by marriage but a true brother at heart, a cousin, and friend to many.

His overwhelming strength, bravery, and courage through his one and half year battle with cancer where he never lost hope, his wit, or his incredible sense of humor will inspire those that loved him forever.

His love of family and being known as Grampy, good conversation, Red Sox Baseball, UConn Basketball, music, and reading are his legacies.

Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 5:00 until 7:00pm in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Ln., Old Lyme, CT. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 10:00am in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to the L+M Waterford Smilow Cancer Care Center.
