Elizabeth was raised in Santiago, Chile and finished high school there. Her Chilean father was an oil company executive. Her mother’s side of the family (Matheson) was from Provincetown. MA and she had the opportunity to visit there several times during and after her high school years. She elected to attend Tufts College (University) in Boston and graduated with a Bachelor of the Arts degree in 1944. She was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. After college she taught at Santiago College in Chile.
After meeting her husband-to-be in Provincetown they wed in December of 1949. Mrs. Hepburn enjoyed fifty one years of marriage to her husband, David Childs Hepburn who passed away in 2001. They raised their family in Rye, N.Y, moving to Old Saybrook, CT after retiring. Elizabeth thoroughly enjoyed her work at B. Altman’s in White Plains for more than a decade.
In 2002, Mrs. Hepburn moved from Old Saybrook to Elim Park in Cheshire, CT where she spent ten years developing many new friends. An avid Yankee fan, Mrs. Hepburn spent much of her free time watching and enjoying her favorite team and discussing the details of the games with others.
A private family service is being held Wednesday July 25 in Old Saybrook where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. Her gentleness, caring nature, generosity and quick sense of humor will be missed by all. The family would like to express their appreciation to Elim Park healthcare, physical therapy and ALSA group for their wonderful care and work. The Swan Funeral Home Old Saybrook has care of the arrangements. Please visit www.swanfuneralhomeoldsaybrook.com to leave an online tribute or condolence.
