Greenbush—Alfred J. Smith Sr, 80, died June 29, 2019 at his residence. He was born August 16, 1938 in Old Town a son of Harry an Yvonne (LeBlanc) Smith.
Al proudly served his country from 1957-1961 as a member of the United States Air Force. Following his return from the service, he became a master electrician and worked in the family business Smith Electric and worked for many years as an electrician for Cianbro, retiring in 2004. He was an avid gun collector and operated Al’s Gun Shop. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a past member of the Kiwanis. He enjoyed rocks and minerals and traveled to various parts of the United States to dig and mine for Earth’s gems.
He is survived by two sons Robert Smith and his companion Lisa Storman of Bradley; Stanley Mertz and his wife Linda of Whitinsville, MA; daughter-in-law Connie Smith of Cardville; 5 grandchildren Alan and Andrea Smith, Allen, Timothy, and Michael Mertz; five great grandchildren Landyn, Tanner, Logan, Cameron, and Caleb; sister Norma Soltow of Bangor. He was predeceased by his wife Beatrice in 2000, son Duane Mertz in 1991, brother Floyd Smith, and sisters Betty Smith and Joanne Deroche.
Friends may call 5-8PM Tuesday at the Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted 10AM Wednesday July 3, 2019 at the Cardville Cemetery, Cards Ridge Road, Greenbush.
