Old Town ME and Woonsocket, RI - Mary Kathryn Hourigan Montville peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on September 7, 2019 in Bangor, Maine. She was born September 24, 1938 to John and Margaret Hourigan in Woonsocket, RI. Mary attended St. Xavier Academy in Providence, RI and earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from Mount Saint Vincent University in New York City, NY in 1959. She married Francis Montville on June 17, 1961 and they had three children, son, Mark and daughters, Kathy and Amy.
Mary worked for 20 years as a teacher in the Old Town school system, retiring in 1996. She taught students at Jefferson Street, Herbert Gray, and Herbert Sargent elementary schools. She was a devoted and active member of the Holy Family Parish of the Catholic Church. Throughout her life she regularly volunteered her time to many community committees and organizations, including the Old Town group of the Maine Community Betterment program and Holy Family Parish Thrift Shop. In addition to volunteering, she was an avid reader and gardener. After retiring Mary enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She loved her family and organized many family vacations to bring her children and their families together from across the country.
Mary is survived by her three children, Mark Montville (Heather) of Sussex, New Brunswick, Kathy Wiggins (Roderick) of Houston, TX, and Amy Tynan (John) of Haverhill, MA; grandchildren Collin Montville, Gillian Montville, Renee Montville; Gavin Wiggins, Brooke (Wiggins) Kato, Hope Wiggins, Jack Tynan, Edward Tynan, and Kyle Tynan; siblings Margaret McLoughlin of Saunderstown, RI and John Hourigan, Jr. (Karen) of Bluffton, SC; as well as nine nieces and two nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Francis Montville, sisters Christine McPherson and Virginia Hourigan, and nephew Patrick McPherson.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 6-8pm, Friday, September 13, 2019 at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St. Old Town. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 am, Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Parish of the Resurrection, Holy Family Catholic Church, Old Town.
