Mr. Martin is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Marjorie Ross Martin. His first wife, Lois, died on May 1, 2002. His only son, Mel, lives in Tucson, AZ and is semi-retired.
Mr. Martin was born on June 8, 1915 in St. Louis. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Martin had a successful career in the Ice Cream and Dairy business, in a company founded by his father, Jacob Martin in 1936. The company, Velvet Freeze Ice Cream, had many stories in the St. Louis area, and for a time had stores in Kansas City and Peoria Ill. Some stores were operated by Mr. Martin’s brothers, the late Paul Martin, the late Irvin Martin and the late Bernard Martin. In 1972 Velvet Freeze was purchased by Adams Dairy, and Mr. Martin stayed on for a time as a consultant.
Mr. Martin’s son paid tribute to his father saying ‘He was one of the most energetic men I ever knew. While many of us get bogged down in our views as we age, dad was always eager to learn something new. He was a voracious reader, and never hesitated to help people with good advice or a tender word. He managed his affairs and investments on a computer, amazing for a man well past 100 years of age. He loved and cherished his family, and it was amply returned.”
Other survivors include his nieces and nephews, Randy Martin, Sheila Martin, Terry Hammer, Peggy Hammer, Melody Binder, and Carla Fox; great nieces and nephews Rebecca Jackson, Amy Bratton, Benjamin Binder, Anna Tounian, Kate Wagner, Beth Hammer, and Lindsay Gross.
Funeral service Friday, December 7, 10:00 a.m. in the Mausoleum at New Mt. Sinai Cemetery. Memorial contributions preferred to Jewish Federation of St. Louis or Congregation Temple Israel.
