Georgia Julia Mehess was born to George and Delila Mehess in Sioux City, Iowa, on September 23, 1937. She was the oldest of four children, raising her three younger brothers. John, Jim and Bill were a fun, loving, mischievous crew to say the least. The stories of their childhood were that of which movies were made. Luckily, Georgia was strong enough to handle anything the boys got into and handled it calmly like only a nurse or mother would. The common line around the house was, "Go get Georgia." She always knew what to do.
Georgia left the family home to marry Gus Matheakis, her escape from taking care of her "Davy Crockett" brothers. Together they dedicated most of their life to St. John's Greek Orthodox Church. She belonged to the Daughters of Penelope, Philoptichos, she baked and cooked for decades of the Greek Festivals, church luncheons and other numerous duties. Up until a few weeks ago, Georgia was sending cards to parishioners on behalf of St. John's. Georgia never forgot a birthday or name day for her family and friends, and you knew a few days before to expect a card from her in the mail.
Georgia worked for a temporary staffing company while volunteering at the church. Every company she worked for tried to hire her on permanently. She would have no part in this because she wanted to move on to learn new things and meet new people, making an impact wherever she was placed. Georgia never wanted the spotlight shown on her, but boy did she deserve it. Nebraska Cancer Specialists chose her as the face of the clinic on their TV commercials and Facebook page because of her willingness and courage to beat cancer. Naturally, the entire clinic fell in love with her.
To know Georgia was to love Georgia. However, if she loved you, you were the lucky one. If she didn't like you, well that's a different story. She loved her family with all her heart and loved animals just as much. Georgia was known as the "animal whisperer." Many turned to her for advice with everyday life and how to care for their animals.
Georgia's Godchildren were an important part of her life. If Georgia was your Godmother, you knew you were protected on this earth and she was always praying for you and loving you. She not only loved her Godchildren, but she also loved all of God's children. Numerous pictures show Georgia lovingly holding children with the most beautiful smile on her face. That made her the happiest.
Georgia Matheakis was intelligent, kind, humble, stubborn, loving, and very, very strong. She was dearly loved by all and will be greatly missed. We will remember what she taught us and how to unconditionally love because of her.
"A capable, intelligent and virtuous woman-who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies and pearls." Proverbs 31
