Grace was a beloved teacher of 47 years in Omaha Public Schools retiring in 1990 from Columbian Elementary. She earned her Bachelor and Master degree’s from University of NE-Omaha and was given their Lifetime Achievement in Economics Education Award in 2000. She also earned the Kazanjian Foundation Award for Teaching Economics. She was devoted to improving the quality of education. Grace was appointed to the Professional Practices Commission where she developed curriculum for OPS. In 1985 she was one of 7 Nebraska finalists for the Teacher in Space program. Longtime memberships include the National Education Association, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, American Association of University Women and Association for Childhood Education International. Grace continued to be involved in teaching as a mentor in St. Luke’s Teen Center.
Preceded in death by parents, Rev. William E. and Inger M. Wilson, husband Frederick A. Schumann, sisters, Mary Graves and Helen Anderson. Survived by sons, Douglas F. (Jennifer) and David P. (Christina); grandchildren, Richard and Ben Schumann, Elizabeth Boettner, and Ben Truska, and 5 great grandchildren. Also survived by sisters, Carolyn Faulhaber, Marjorie Noble and Joanne (Vaughn) Carlson, many nieces and nephews, friends and students. Grace enriched the lives of many through her love of teaching and love of the Lord.
Grace was a 13+ year cancer survivor. She was an avid reader, writer and published poet. She loved to travel and made friends worldwide. Memorials suggested to St. Luke Methodist Teen Center, Estabrook Cancer Center, and/or UNO College of Education.
Visitation Friday, Feb 24th 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Crosby Colonial Chapel. Funeral Service Saturday Feb 25th, 10:00 am at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 11810 Burke Street. Interment Westlawn Hillcrest Cemetery.
