
Ed was born on February 22, 1924 in Oneonta, the son of the late Ira and Marian (Clark) Kilpatrick. On July 1, 1961, Ed married Barbara J. Duncan in Sherrill, New York. Ed and Barb celebrated 41 years of marriage until Barb’s passing in 2003.
He was predeceased by his brother, Karl C. Kilpatrick, and several cousins.
Throughout his life, Ed’s passion was sports. Whether he was participating or watching from the sidelines, Ed enjoyed being a part of the action. He attended Oneonta schools, graduating from Oneonta High School in 1942. Following graduation, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. Upon his return from military service Ed attended Ithaca College, where he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree. He then went on to Springfield College in Massachusetts where he received his Master’s Degree in Education.
Ed began his teaching career in South New Berlin, where he taught physical education and also coached basketball. After teaching there for just one year, he went on to teach and coach at both Otego and Oneonta High Schools, before accepting a position in Canastota Central School, moving there in 1955. While at Canastota Ed taught and coached for over 15 years and at one point served as the school’s athletic director. He retired in 1979. Ed moved back to Oneonta in 2004.
Ed enjoyed golfing in his spare time, and was a member of the Kanon Valley Country Club. He also devoted some of his time to his communities, being a former member of the Canastota Lions Club, and an active member of the Oneida YMCA. He is also a former member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Fayetteville, New York and a current member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.
Friends may call from 9am to 10am on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta at which time his family will be receiving guests. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 10am at the funeral home.
