

She was born in Oneonta NY, April 20, 1925. She was the daughter of Marguerite (Dumond) and George H. Waters. She graduated from St. Mary’s school and Oneonta High school, class of 1943. She received her RN from the Benedictine Hospital, Kingston, NY. While there, she was a member of the Cadet Nursing Program, a program for training nurses for the military during World War II. The war ended so she did not serve.
Peg was a nurse at Fox Hospital for a year then was awarded a grant to study at the school of Public Health at the University of Pennsylvania. As part of that grant she served 2 years for the Delaware County Public Health Department in Stamford, NY. She received her BS from Columbia
University and her MS from SUCO. She then joined Sidney School district as school nurse. She later was hired as school nurse teacher for the Oneonta School District, where she spent the greater part of her career. She retired in 1986. It was during those years where she met so many
students, and faculty who became very close friends.
Peg was predeceased by her parents and her brother, George and his daughter, Ann.
She is survived by her brother, Joseph, and his wife, Barbara, of Oneonta, and her sister-in-law, Margaret Waters, of Essex Falls, NJ. She has many nieces and nephews who were all important in her life. Family of George and Margaret (Peg) are Mary W. Bate and her husband, Oscar, of Essex Fells, NJ, Sue W. Tanner and her husband, Rick, of Scotch Plains, NJ, Patricia W. Eden and her husband, Chris, of Seattle, WA, Michael and his wife, Ellen, of Newburyport, MA , George J.
and his wife, Alex, of New Brunswick, NJ and Steven Waters, of Edmonston, NY. Family of Joe and Barb are their daughter, Nancy W. Stiebel and her husband, Chris of Glen Allen, VA; and sons, Daniel and his wife, Lynn, of Griffin, GA, Terry and his wife, Linda of Gaithersburg, MD, Robert of Franklin, TN and John and his wife, Sharon of Saugerties, NY and many great nieces and nephews whom she loved.
Peg was a very active member in the community. She was a member of AAUW and the book group, on the Board of Family Services for many years, Garden Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, The Fox Hospital Guild, NYSHA, CCAL, and the Retired Teachers Association. She was a Red Cross volunteer. She was a supporter of the Oneonta Concert Association, Orpheus Theater, and the Catskill Symphony. She was a long time member of St. Mary’s Church and Rosary Society and was active in the Bereavement Committee. Daily mass was often a part of her busy schedule after retirement. She was very proud of her RN and continued to stay current with issues in the nursing profession.
Peg had many wonderful friends who were very supportive during her illness. They are so numerous it is impossible to list them, even if we knew all of them. Peg’s family is truly grateful for their love and care.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:15 am on Friday, August 3, 2012 at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut Street, Oneonta with Rev. John Rosson, officiating. Interment will follow in the Waters family plot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call on Thursday, August 2, 2012 from 4 to 7 pm at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.
