

He was born June 28, 1950, in Delhi, NY, the son of the late Carl Phillip Shaw and Grace (Dorosky) Shaw Oles.
Ron graduated from Oneonta High School in 1969. He received an Associate’s degree from Delhi College and a BA in History from SUCO. He continued his education at SUCO, obtaining his teaching certification.
On August 9, 1980, Ron married Letty Sampson at the Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown, NY.
Ron was a well-liked elementary teacher at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School for 30 years. He specialized in Math, Science, and Health, retiring in 2007. He was once voted teacher of the year.
Ron was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing and watching sports, especially tennis. He developed many close friendships through the years while playing tennis at the Oneonta Tennis Club. Recently he enjoyed learning about wine and microbrewery beers. Most of all, Ron loved his family and enjoyed entertaining in his home.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Letty Shaw, of Oneonta; daughter Leann (Steven) Kerr of Holly Ridge, NC; sister Bonnie Shaw (John Hartner) of Oneonta; three aunts, Betty Dean, Joan Wollaber, and Pauline Fowlston; two sisters-in-law, Susan (Royce) Livingston and Dawn (John) Knutson; one brother-in-law, Jimmy (Madeline) Sampson; nieces and nephews, Tracy Shaw, Kelly Livingston Brown, Sarah and James Livingston, Lia Miller-Spicer, Larissa and Valerie Miller, and Jonathan, Joel, and Jason Sampson; as well as numerous cousins and friends. He will be dearly missed by his two dogs, Bella and Milo.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, June 13, 2014, at 1:00 PM at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. David Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory may be made to Varsity O Club, c/o Joe Hughes, Athletic Director, 130 Upper East Street, Oneonta, New York 13820.
