He was born July 30, 1940 in Oneonta the son of the late Elmer and Iva (Montgomery) Eichler.
For many years, Vernard worked construction for the Laborers Union Local #17. But for the last 14 years he was the maintenance man at the 6th Ward Athletic Club.
In 1963, Vernard married Patricia Ann Harrington in Montrose, PA. Together they shared 54 years of marriage.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing until his health didn’t allow him to anymore.
Vernard was an all-around good guy and a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was a member of the 6th Ward Athletic Club.
Vernard is survived by his loving wife, Pat Eichler of Oneonta; two daughters, Laura Laub and Michele Kelly both of Chittenango; granddaughter, Amanda Lynn Eichler and her mother, Kristen Larsen; one grandson, Wesley Davy; two sisters, Agnes Lindsley and Ruth Grant; three brothers, Bruce and Linda Eichler, Richard and Susan Eichler and Elmer, Jr. and Marie Eichler; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Mark Eichler and daughter, Elaine Jenks.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:00 pm with the Rev. Bob Wilkie officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
Vernard had two requests, that anyone who wishes to attend the services do not wear a suit instead wear blue jeans and also that there be NO flowers, instead make a donation to the 6th Ward Athletic Club, 22 West Broadway, Oneonta, New York 13820.
