Born January 18, 1926 in St. Ingebert, Germany, Werner immigrated to this country as a toddler, coming through Ellis Island with his parents, Jacob and Emma (Mathieu) Schmitt and his brother, Walter in 1930. He grew up on Long Island until his family moved to their farm on White Hill Rd. Werner graduated from Franklin Central School and attended Hartwick College. He served in the US Army during World War II at Camp Croft, Spartanburg, SC.
In 1947, he married Arlene (Anderson) Schmitt; they were married for 58 years until Arlene’s death in 2005. Werner supported his family by working their farm, growing/selling sweet corn and other produce, and, one winter, when things were a little tight, he went to work at Scintilla (Bendix/Amphenol) to ‘get them through’…and he stayed for 38 years.
Werner was active in his membership at Main Street Baptist Church, was a member of the Franklin American Legion Post #1689, enjoyed playing golf at Woodhaven and Ouleout courses, but he was happiest when spending time with his family, immediate and extended. He was also proud of his German heritage and of having his name placed on the Wall of Honor at Ellis Island.
He is survived by his sons, James (Kathy) Schmitt of Edmeston, Peter (Ellen) Schmitt of Emmons/Goodyear Lake, Paul (Mary) Schmitt of North Franklin; his daughter, Sarah Schmitt of Oneonta; his seven granddaughters, Kristen (Ned) Lindner, Nicole (Mike) Burdick, Traci (Gary) Bourdon, Michelle Schmitt, Jennifer (Niel) Leksander, Lisa Schmitt and Emily Schmitt; his great-granddaughter, Gretchen Leksander; his brother, Edgar (Vera) Schmitt; his brothers-in-laws, Karl Anderson and Harold (Joyce) Anderson, as well as cousins and dozens of nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife, Arlene; his parents; his brother, Walter; and several brothers- and sisters-in laws.
Werner’s family would like to offer a special “thank you” to all of the caring employees at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford. Your kind, professional care made Werner’s time there so comfortable; we deeply appreciate each and every one of you.
Calling hours will be Friday, January 6 from 4-7 pm and funeral service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, January 7 at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta. Burial will take place at Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Franklin American Legion Post #1689 and/or the Franklin Emergency Squad.
