Nancy, we were in the same graduating class at Chaffey, 1957. I didn’t know your Mom but saw you Dad several times  at Lininger and Shorts on Holt. He was such a nice man. I’m sorry about your Mom. Dear sweet Eileen was my landlady for over 30 years.  She and her husband Bud were two of the kindest folks God created!
I am sad for her family and friends as they will indeed miss her.   It is always hard to have those one loves leave.  She  however is reunited with her beloved Bud for which I am sure ‘happies’  her heart!  Please accept  my deepest condolences. kb

She was animal lover.  She had stories about when she was growing up and cared for Goats, Chickens, and “everything else” that would be on a farm.  When her kids were not around she switched to caring for her Dogs…. Dooky the Dachshund, then Sandy, then Missy, then finally a Robot Dog.

As a testament to her nurturing personality, we have the story of Henry the One Legged Seagull. Grandma felt sorry for this gull and started feeding it.  Grandpa was never a fan of seagulls since the followed the fishing boats around, stole the bait, and pooped on things.  Before long, Henry came by every day at noon to get left over bread.  Neighbors brought bread to Grandma so she could feed this plump one legged seagull.

In later years, anytime I talked to Grandma she would tell me that she really missed Grandpa.  Well now she will join him in heaven.

She raised 2 kids and many grandkids, and had a great business with her husband. She LOVED and CARED for us.

If anyone would ask me how to live a good life, I would tell them to “live like my 103 year old Grandma Eileen Short.”  
We all have very fond MEMORIES and were lucky to have her in our life.  We never wanted our time with her to end.

The Bayless family purchased their home on Beach Road in 1957 and were most fortunate that, within a short period of time, Bud and Eileen Short purchased the home next door.  

Bud and Eileen were the best of neighbors…thoughtful, kind, caring and friendly. It was always a pleasure to see their welcoming smiles whenever we would see them during our visits to the family beach house.

Eileen always took the time to stop and say hello and ask how everyone in our family was doing whenever we would visit the beach house. We will always remember her gracious and welcoming manner.

Our two families grew over the years and the respective grandkids would often spend many days playing together. Eileen always welcomed our children into her home to play with her grandchildren. There were so many good times shared and lasting memories made between the families over the years.

We simply could not have asked for a nicer neighbor and are so grateful our paths crossed in life. It is with great sadness that we learn of Eileen’s passing, but thankful she had such a long and beautiful life surrounded by her loving family.

(Continue from part 1)   She made sure the emergency radio was working AND we had have a backup battery, and other signally devices.  We knew it was her way to make sure that her family was safe!
	
Grandpa Bud would say “Eileen, you worry too much.”  However, she always came back with one of her other Family Famous sayings: Now Bud…SOMEONE has to worry about this stuff.  If I don’t worry….then WHO IS GOING TO?
She worked side-by-side my Grandpa Bud at the tire shop for many decades…I think I would have a hard time doing that with my spouse.  If one of the workers were having a problem, then it was her problem too, and she cared deeply for the tire shop employees.

Dinners were always amazing with fresh yellow tail tuna expertly cooked in her famous beer batter, and fresh vegetables from her garden.  

She had a very Green thumb.  She taught patience and caring by growing beautiful roses and oversized vegetables.  She was known on beach road as the Vegetable Lady since she kept her neighbors and security guards well stocked in healthy vegetables.  She was an influencer on beach road and caused many others to start gardens.

In the evenings we would turn off the lights and have Kodachrome slide shows which detailed all the places they traveled….Japan, Brazil, South America, Europe.  We would have guess speaker of Uncle Bob or Aunt Ruth.  Aunt Ruth had the uncanny knack of striking the same EXACT pose at the lower left of the picture no matter if she was standing in front of a Hotel, Niagara Falls, the Eiffel Tower, famous fountain, or the Mona Lisa…to prove that she was there.

Although we had just finished a big meal and she would tell us…  “I am not really hungry…I just want something to eat.”  We would then have ice cream and her famous rhubarb strawberry pied “just like we had it back on the farm.”
If we were lucky we would have a beach bonfire and make s’mores.

Eileen Short (also known as Super Grandma Short as my kids called her ….you see they could not remember that she was Great…to them she was just SUPER and she was good with that!)  She loved her family.  Her husband Bud and She loved their 2 kids, 5 Grandkids, 11 Great Grand kids, and 1 Great-great Grandchild.  And we all loved her back.

She represented the ultimate in motherly LOVE. We always felt well loved and cared for when Grandma Short was around.

For us Grandkids, it was always magical to go to Grandma's home for sleepovers, or family gatherings for Birthdays, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve.  There was always lots of fun and conversation.

It was always even more magical to go down to Grandma’s home on Beach Road.  We were free to play in the sand and surf and had no worries.  Fresh salt air and breeze in the morning was overcome by smells of homemade cinnamon rolls and scrambled eggs in the morning…and sometimes the Grunion we caught from the night before.  At noon there was always plenty of Strawberries and Watermelon, and an extra bowl of popcorn for everyone.  Grandpa would always need popcorn while watching baseball on the television.

Some mornings we would take out the fishing boat.  Grandma patiently taught me how to gently set the hook, and smoothly pull in the big one.  She was the best Fisher-woman ever as far as I know.  She usually caught Jack Pot Tuna or the prettiest El Dorado (although Grandpa might have snuck it in her bag).  She was also our “Family Disaster management officer,” otherwise known as our worry wart before we went out in the deep sea.  She made sure we had more than enough gas.  In case we were stranded she made sure we had a gallon of water available, BUT one was not enough… we had to have 2 gallons water, a jar of pickles and extra food.    (to be continued)
