February 28, 1928 – August 11, 2011
James William Berg "Jim", beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather,
Friend and Hero peacefully went home to be with the Lord on August 11,
2011 surrounded by the family that loved him so very much. Born in 1928,
Jim lived a full, rich life of experiences that few will ever know. A native of Chicago, IL; Jim lived in many cities, but Southern California was his home for the last 49 years.
Enlisting in the Military at the age of 17, Jim served his country
proudly in the US and overseas in the Marines, Army and Air Force. After his military career, he went on to serve his community for 32 years as a
Police Officer and Detective in Detroit, MI and Montclair, CA and after
retirement, as a Police Academy instructor.
Jim was liked by everyone who ever met him and loved by everyone
who ever knew him. A good man and great father and husband, Jim is
survived by his wife of 57 years, Joann; his five children, Jim Berg and
daughter-in-law Wendy, Mary Kay Berg and Steve Dugan, Bill Berg, LizAnn James and son-in-law Dennis, Eric Berg and daughter-in-law Dina Berg; and his five Grand Children, Stephen Dugan, Sean Dugan, Amanda James, Cassie James and Kenna Berg. He also leaves behind countless friends and "extended family" that knew and loved him as Dad, Grandpa and Pappy.
Jim was a smart and patient man who loved to be with people. He
loved Europe and travel, swing music, books, British comedies and "his
stuff". A member of the American Legion and the International Police Association, he spent his last few years connecting with people around the world via email, writing magazine articles and crafting a novel soon to be published. He leaves a lasting legacy.
