She was born February 12, 1927, in Shelby, Ohio, to the late George Wesley and Mabel (Perry) Payton. She was an area homemaker her entire life. Emogene will be remembered as a loving, caring, generous, and thoughtful lady. In her younger years, she was a 4-H leader. Emogene was a past member of Order of the Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter #17 where she was a Grand Matron and Mother Advisor for the Rainbow Girls.
She also enjoyed her time spent in Canada, and always had fun fishing and swimming at the cottage. Square dancing was of great joy to her. She also enjoyed trips to south Texas and Mexico.
Emogene is survived by a son, David Briggs; two daughters, Karen Briggs (Dana) Wikholm and Sherry Kempf; four grandchildren, Kristi (Laura), Michael, Susan, and Christina (Clayton); seven great-grandchildren, Avery, Ashton, Ivey, Cadence, Christopher, Mackenzie and Reagan; and two great-great grandchildren, Devon and Roland.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Roland V. Briggs; three sisters, Hazel McCarty, Faye Caugherty, and Nelda Koenig; brother, Denzil Payton; and grandson, Michael Jacoby.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Mansfield Memorial Park, 2507 Park Avenue West, Ontario, Ohio.
