George Clinton Mack Sprang, age 89, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully late Friday evening, April 26, 2024, at Country Meadow Care Center in Bellville. He was surrounded by his family and is now resting in the arms of his Lord and Savior.
Born March 6, 1935, in Mansfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late George E. Sprang and Anna (Mack) Poulton. He grew up in Lucas and was a very social, determined, generous, caring and family oriented man. He eloped to Indiana to marry the love of his life, Yvonne Shrimplin. He had a great sense of humor and was a joker. George was a very proud veteran of the US Army serving in Ohm, Germany. He was an excellent marksman and remained patriotic throughout his life. He was a long time member of the Amvets.
He was very civic minded and was an Assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts for 15 years. He was active at Diamond Hill Cathedral volunteering his time in various ways. George was a natural storyteller and enjoyed sharing his adventures from childhood and his military time.
He was a skilled machinist and retired from Ohio Brass. George had a variety of interests including gardening, being outdoors, camping (in his younger years), ice skating, and canoeing. Trying different restaurants was one of his favorite pastimes.
He is survived by four children, Mark (Rhonda) Sprang, Keith (Dianna) Sprang, Michele Sprang-Yee and Melinda (Dennis) Fox; seven grandchildren, Loren (Jason) Case, Alan Sprang, Jacob Yee, Brianna Fox (Justus Bartman), Claire Sprang, Nicklas Yee and Allison Yee; and one great-grandchild, Declan Case and another, Ezra Case, on the way.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Yvonne Sprang; and two half-brothers, John and Bruce Poulton.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Wappner Funeral Directors-Ontario, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Mel Schroeder officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Richland County Veterans Burial Detail. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Country Meadow Care Center, 4910 Algire Rd., Bellville, OH 44813.
