Angelo Gatto , age 92, was born in Brooklyn, NY to Serafina (Barranco) and Francesco Gatto. He and his siblings had to grow up quickly when his father died at a young age, leaving his mother who spoke no English with five children to raise. Angelo, his younger brother and three older sisters finished their schooling while holding down jobs in order to contribute to the family.
He enlisted in the Army in 1951 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict as a sargeant, running a post office on base. Upon his return he went to tech school and became a printer and proud member of Amalgamated Lithographers of America.
After retiring he followed two sisters to Florida. Although he loved his family he lived life on his own terms , preferring one of solitude. He liked to work in his yard, cook Sicilian food, smoke his pipe and drink a cup of coffee while sitting on his back porch listening to opera. He had no use for modern technology. He loved to go to the shooting range with his buddies and was an avid collector of firearms. He made his own bullets and was a former member of the Cast Bullet Association and Seminole County Gun & Archery Association. He was also a member of the NRA although he leaned left politically.
He is predeceased by his parents and his brother Frank, and his sisters Josephine, Frances and Esther . He is survived by nieces and nephew Loretta, Peter, Donald, Sarina, James and Cindy and his sister in law Roz, also many great- nieces and great- nephews.
He will be laid to rest with military honors and the family will celebrate his life at a later date. Donations may be made in his name to Shriners Children’s Hospital.
A graveside service for Angelo will be held Thursday, December 28, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Deltona Memorial Gardens, 1295 Saxon Blvd, Orange City, FL 32763.
