Doris V. Walls-Myton, affectionately known by most as “Aunt Dor”, entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 12, 2010. She was born on May 2, 1921 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harold K. Earle. When Doris was eight (8) years old, her biological mother died and later, she was raised by her stepmother, Maria Taladano, who instilled the importance of education to Doris. She made sure Doris attended the most prestigious private schools throughout her early academic years.
After finishing with school, Doris went into fashion design and became a seamstress by trade in Jamaica. During this time, she taught young ladies to become seamstresses and assisted them in developing their skills to help themselves.
Doris migrated to the United States of America in 1952 and thereafter pursued higher education and improved herself in almost every facet of her life. She attended Manhattan Medical Assistants’ School and Hunter College in New York City. She worked as a Microbiologist for New York Hospital and Cornell Medical Center for twenty-eight (28) years until she reached retirement age. Even when she was in her late fifties and early sixties, she was still attending Hunter College. Her motto was to keep learning to keep up with the changes of time.
During her first year in New York, she met and fell in love with her beloved, Lester Myton. Unfortunately, that union did not yield any children. But, she acquired eight (8) of them from her new husband. Her love and devotion were extended to all of Lester’s children and family members. She saw to it that all the children who desired a higher education would get one. She stressed to them the importance of higher education and successfully endeavored to assist each one.
In addition to Doris’ job at New York Hospital, she sought and found numerous ways to supplement their income because of the large family. She sewed garments for others. She bought and sold wigs and ladies latest fashions. She was an Amway distributor for a number of years. She even purchased an apartment building for rental purposes to meet her family’s needs. She was certainly an entrepreneur at heart. Doris was an extensive world traveler. She explored countries such as Europe, Egypt, Israel and Japan, just to name a few.
Doris made great sacrifices to help those in need. She was the epitome of a true giver. Nothing was too good for her to give away. A few adjectives that best describe Doris are, intellectual, sophisticated, friendly, approachable, patient, generous, loving, and compassionate.
For approximately twenty years, Doris was a member of the East Tremont Baptist Church, where they loved and admired her for her high standard of ethics and love for the Lord. She was involved in both junior and gospel choirs of the church. She designed and made the Pastor’s robes and also robes for all the choir members.
Because of the failing health of Doris and her husband, they relocated to Deltona, Florida in December 2003, so that their daughter, Majorie could take care of them. They made Trinity Assembly their home church. Lester preceded her in June 2005 and she missed him dearly. Her health deteriorated more in the years that followed. In March 2008, she moved into her daughter’s home, as she could no longer live by herself. Her health declined dramatically, as she became totally immobile. Eventually, she was transported to 950 Union Circle, a private assisted living home in Deltona, Florida. Diane Eberhardt, her nurse, took exceptionally good care of her to the very end. She loved and cared for Doris, as she would her own mother.
Doris is survived by her brother, Wollis in CT, two sisters, Edris in NJ and Ashlyn in NY, and all her eight stepchildren: Kirk Myton, Norma Williams, Anthony Myton, Majorie Van De Ven, Cedrick Myton, Thomas Myton, Olivia Thompson and Travel Myton, including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Doris is now resting in the arms of God, through her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Oh how she yearned for this moment for so long, but His timing is always perfect!
Now, her soul is resting in peace…Glory to God
