Irving was such a sweet man.  We shared birthdays… just a few decades apart.  This picture was taken when he lived in Springview.  The neighborhood threw him a birthday party.  He was so appreciative and really enjoyed the day.  I wish he would have accepted the honor flight that was offered to him.  This picture was taken on Feb 21, 2021

One last picture and memory.  This was from my visit in 2019.  I was staying with Irv for a few days and Rob and Scar joined us for dinner at Goodfella’s.  I treasure those few days because Irv and I got to spend special time together.  We talked, laughed, did crossword puzzles, visited Marie, and watched many Hallmark movies.  The weather was turning really bad on the day I was supposed to fly out, so I asked Irv if I could change my flight to the next day, spending one more night with him.  “If you have to” was his reply.  

This was taken at his 100th birthday party.  By then, we were talking on the phone at least a couple of times a week.  As time went on, those “buzzes” became more and more frequent and loving (and funny).  The last few weeks of his life, I spoke to him almost every day.  A week and a half before he passed, we had a Facetime from my new patio, and he asked to see it from all angles - which, of course, I did.  From being the person who turned me onto my lifelong love of watching gymnastics to being the first to use the phrase “Love is love” many years ago to all the advice and wisdom over the years, to all the hugs and kisses…I’m going to miss you so much, my darling Kissin’ Uncle Irv.

When I was on FaceTime with Irv, usually I wouldn't see more than this of his face. Sometimes I would see more of the ceiling than him, but it was always a joy talking to him.

Friendly Confines, over the years one of the few places that still stands selling his favorite delicacy.  2 Vienna beef hot dogs, chili and jalapeños and we would always start with some onion rings.  He was a celebrity there.  We would show up every week, our high top by the kitchen entrance.  The waitress would bring us drinks and put in the usual order.

His fuel of choice the Italian Hero, although he was always down for a pepperoni pizza.  Scar is with him in this picture sharing in the smiles. 

One of the fondest memories I have is when Grandpa was living in Vero Beach and whenever I was up in his old neck of the woods I would swing by the cemetery and face time him so he could spend time with his cutie.  The things he would say just touched my heart. 

Grandpa, Norman, Craig and Myself were in Vero Beach, Classic transportation provided by Norman who graciously let me take the Goat for a ride with the top down after hot dogs at the Tiki Bar where we went for lunch every trip down to see him during his 2 tours in Vero Beach.  

With at this point over 100 years experience as always I treasured every word of advise Grandpa has given me.  No matter what he never judged anyone and would always say everyone has to live their own life, just do what makes you happy.
His favorite pastime in his later years was just having a meal with Family.  No matter when you would stop by to see him, it was time to eat lol.

This is the last time I visited Irv in November, 2021. I spent a great day with him talking, reminiscing and eating some good food.
For years I have been Facetiming with Irv every week. It has always been the highlight of my week and I will miss it sorely.
My relationship with Irv began in the 1950s in the Bronx when he would come over every day for lunch and sometime I would get a horsey ride. He then moved to Monticello and we to Long Island. I loved our trips to Monticello see Irv, Frieda and the rest of the family. He has always been a part of my life and his passing leaves a big hole. I love you Uncle Yunion.


I had the pleasure of attending Irv's 100th birthday as did a lot of other friends and relatives. This is a picture taken just before we went to the party. I shared this with many people and no one could believe he was 100.

Growing up in Monticello I had the pleasure of being close to "Uncle Irving" as I called him. He was actually the cousin of my father, Albert. We got to spend a lot of time with him and his wife Frieda. I did not get to see much of him after I left at age 18. I have now lived in California for 50 years but "once a Meyer always a Meyer" and proudly so.
What a long eventul life he lead. I am sure they are stocking up on hotdogs up there in his new home.
