Paul Oral Fredericks was born in Gatliff, Kentucky. His dad, Charlie,
was so thrilled that he went into his daughters', bedroom, Mary, age 3, and
Sarah, age 5, at three o'clock in the morning, awakened them, to tell them
about their new brother. The girls lay there and guessed how big this brother
was? With their hands, they measured 5 inches, then 10 inches long. Their
dad said, "he's longer than that" "then let's see him." They were happy with
this new brother. When Paul was two weeks old, the family moved to
Jellico, Kentucky. Charlie wrote upon the front door in Gatliff: P. O.
Fredericks born here on February 5, 1930.

When Paul was about 2 years old and when the church bell rang, he
would say "Ding Dong, come on P.O.

When a new baby was born on Kentucky Hill or moved there, Sarah,
age 8, would take Paul, age 3, with her to visit the baby. They went to
Aggie Holts house. Fannie and Orie were sitting in the doorway, a baby was
lying between them. The baby's name was Glenna Margaret Sharp.

Anytime Paul visited anyone or anyone visited him, he sang his song,
"If I Could Hear My Mouver Pray Again," He sang the song for Baby
Glenna.

One day Paul's dad went to Williamsburg. A neighbor came by and
asked Paul, "Where is your daddy?" Paul said, he went to Willies beard
(Williamsburg).

We lived in Fairview, between the river and the mountain. When we
needed coal for the fire, Paul and Sarah would go to the mine. Each would
get a tow sack half full of coal, go to the slate dump which was about 50 feet long or
longer. They laid their sacks on the slate dump, sat on the sack and slid
down the hill. This was a lot of fun.

Paul had some friends, George and James Cooper, who lived in
Fairview. Paul got permission to spend the night with James. He stayed
three nights. James came home with him. He asked dad ifPful~ •
back home with him. Dad said, "No, and I'm gonna whip him for staying
longer than he was supposed to."

James said, "Mr. Fredericks, if I get you a switch to whip him with, will you
let him go back home with me?" Dad said, "Get out of here!" They were
pals.

Paul and three siblings enrolled in a music school. Sarah sang
soprano, Paul sang alto, Earl sang tenor and G. L. sang bass, our quartet.
We sang together for about two years, and then Paul decided to drop out. I
don't know if he sang anymore or not. Ed Scalf from Corbin was our
teacher. He said we made a good quartet.

Paul joined the Army. He didn't stay very long. He developed
Chorea, called Saint Vitas Dance in our area. After he got over this, he
joined the Navy and stayed about 9 or 10 years.

Paul and Glenna lived in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and  Michigan.

At one time, people asked Paul and me if we were twins. I'm five
years older than he.

One day Mom and Dad went to the grocery store and left Sarah, age
twelve, Paul, age 7, Mae, age 3, and Jim, age 1. They went for a walk, about
one quarter of a mile. Sarah was carrying Jim and Paul was leading Mae.
They came to a plowed field. Paul became angry at Sarah about something
and started throwing clods of dirt at her. Sarah, holding Jim, sat down in the
road and began to cry. Jim, on her lap, stood up and put his arms around
her, started kissing her. Everyone, including Sarah, began to laugh. They
went back home.

I have known Paul Fredericks ever since I was six years old. When asked to write something about
him, I had to really think about what to write. I have known him for 56 years, but not around him very
much at all. It's kind of a funny thing about friendships. They stay true even when you don't see each
other for long periods of time. You just continue to call now and again and maybe see each other after
several years pass, but you just never forget each other and you still love that person as you always
did. You just visit as though time had never passed at all. That's exactly how it was with Paul. We just
continued from where we left.
What a wonderful man! He was a great dad to his children. He always worked hard to provide what his
family needed. They had respect always for him. He earned and deserved that respect. When I was a
young girl I would spend the night there because I was friends with his daughter and the family treated
me like family. Family members that came from out of town treated Ille that way also. I remember him
having to work on the railroad up here in Toledo, Ohio to provide for his family. He worked hard and
had to be away a lot. I also recall how good the kids behaved when he arrived home from work. His
wife Glenna usually had her famous chili dogs ready for him and believe me she had the best hot dog
sauce in the world. I think those were his favorite.
Paul would take his family to the drive in movies, and it was so exciting when I was allowed to go with
them. We'd go early so we could play at the playground area first and then popcorn and movies.
I so enjoyed going to Paul and Glenna's 50th wedding anniversary which was at their daughter and sonin-
law's beautiful house, Theresa and Preston Hoover. What a magnificent party they put on for Paul
and Glenna. Then a couple of years ago I did get a chance to see them for a few hours and had those
wonderful chili dogs sitting at their dining table with Paul and Glenna and Paula. There it was again!
Just like never been apart. Just like family again. How wonderful it was to be with them. Oh yea, and
he did tease me about being heavy, but then again, isn't that what family is allowed to do? We laughed
and it was okay. Of course Paul being like he always was, went back outside to get some work done,
but he would take some break time and come in to visit. Very recently their son, Steven took the
opportunity to go spend a year with his mom and dad to help them out Wow! What a wonderful time
for a father and son to have.
I remember how absolutely good and caring Paul was to his wife, Glenna. He was faithful and loyal
and respectful. He loved her to the utmost and I watched how he would help give her a hand at getting
things done. She,Glenna, of course treated Paul the same. Because of this, they had this long lasting
marriage of 62 years. Paula told me that Paul had said to Glenna recently that they were two peas in a
pod. How true this statement really is.
A few days ago when I got word of Paul's passing it was sad to hear. Today, as I realized in the
beginning of this writing, when you see that person again, it will be as time never passed. And so I
feel it will be that way with Paul. I will truly miss Paul. Until we meet again,
May God Be with His family throughout this difficult time.

Glenna, Peggy and I were so sorry to hear about Paul.Will always remember the great time we had in March with you and Paul.I know mom enjoyed setting up all night with you guys like you were teenagers again.
