Roy was born on April 3, 1924, in McIntosh, Florida, and grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Ocala National Forest as a young man and enlisted in the U.S. Navy prior to the start of World War Two. He married Marie Slack in 1942and served with distinction in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War as an ordinance specialist and nuclear weapons loading training officer, retiring from the Navy in 1970 as an officer having risen from the enlisted ranks as what was called a “Mustang” in military slang. He then served on the Mount Dora Police Department and later the Mount Dora Fire Department as a Captain for ten years. He and Marie then moved from Mount Dora to Orange Park in 1992 at the urging of their daughter, Lynda Marie Lewis, who is a resident there, and it also brought them closer to their son, Roy R. Lewis III, who resides in Salt Springs. Marie preceded Roy in death in 2008, and he is now where he wished to be, at her side again.
The family wishes to thank Delores Ellison his adopted daughter, Juanita McIver, Catherine Earl, Melissa Bevel, Marva Pickett, Callie Lang and Edna Wright for their support as his loving caretakers.
Roy requested that donations be given to Caboodle Ranch P.O Box 299 Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 32004. Caboodle is a sanctuary for unwanted cats.
