Maria del Carmen Rivera Couvertier was born on October 14th, 1943, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She was a woman of great character and determination. She always surrounded herself with music, either singing (while often making up lyrics), dancing, working for many years as a secretary of the Puerto Rican Musician’s Union, or marrying its President, Angel Nater, whom she loved dearly. She had a beautiful tuft of gray hair since she was young, earning her the nickname “Kana.” As an adult, she covered it because she wanted to look as young as she felt. She was a strong-minded woman, known to have many jobs to provide for her family. She endured loss and sadness, but that did not shrink her spirit. She was a woman of God and never lost her faith. She lived proud of her children and her four grandchildren and was known to do all the silly faces in the world to make one of them laugh. She loved her family, books, telenovelas, ice cream, and a good cold Pepsi.
Kana went home with Jesus on December 12th, 2020. She danced and enjoyed her music until her last breath. Her husband and son Armando were waiting for her in Heaven. And her daughters, Yolanda and Melissa, and grandchildren Samantha, Adriana, Andrea, and Armando will miss her terribly but know she’ll always be with them in every song they hear.
