Alfred "Al" J. Sette Jr.

Alfred J. Sette Jr. (Al)- Eastham, Massachusetts , Age 88. Al was born on July 21, 1931 in Stamford, CT, the eldest child of Dr. Alfred J. Sette, Sr. and Margaret D’Onofrio Sette. He graduated from Stamford High School and earned a B.A. in Sociology from St. Michael’s College in Vermont. He returned to Stamford and worked at the YMCA while studying at Columbia University where he received a Master’s degree in Sociology. He was drafted into the Army in 1956 and was stationed in Georgia when he met and married his wife of 61 years, Kathryn Duncan Sette. They returned to Stamford to start their family, where Al resumed his work with the local YMCA and served on the school board. A job offer with the YMCA of Rochester, NY, led him to relocate the family and take positions working with local youth before starting his career in the city government of Rochester from which he retired as Budget Director in 1994. In addition to his career, Al was active in his community, serving as President of the 19th Ward Community Association, coaching Little League, and advocating for youth and social justice issues, particularly integration of the public schools. Upon retirement, Alfred and Kathryn moved to Eastham, MA, where engagement in community service, family, friends, travel, enjoying classical music, and gardening became his primary pursuits. In Eastham, Al served as a volunteer on various boards and committees supporting the community including the Eastham Council on Aging, the Eastham Board of Assessors, serving as Chairman, and the board of the Friends of the Eastham Library. For a number of years he participated in the Cape Cod Senior Softball League, playing for the Chatham Squires where he forged lasting friendships pursuing his lifetime love of baseball. He was a serious fan of the New York Yankees recognized for his keen memory for sports trivia and statistics. Second only to his love for his family was his devotion to the canine population of Eastham and their human companions, and he was frequently seen in the company of his Belgian Sheepdog, Bella, who followed Otello, Duca, and Daco. He is survived by his wife Kathryn, children Sarah M. Sette (Aaron Schneiderman), Martha K. Sette (William Knoppel), Alfred D. Sette (Judith Putman-Sette), six grandchildren, and his sister, Mary Louise Sette. At Al’s request there are no religious services scheduled, but a gathering of celebration and remembrance will be planned for family and friends at a later date.
