Born in Newark, NJ to John and Ruth Gilmour, “Doo-Wop Dave” grew up singing a capella with his schoolmates and on the street corners of Livingston, NJ. His first recorded album was with the doo-wop group The Chantons. He continued singing a capella on Cape Cod in the doo-wop groups Street Dreams and Avenue X. Dave was also a songwriter and guitarist, creating music with his son, Damien (lyricist). They released an album together: ‘Chasing A Dream’ which features guest vocals by his daughter, Rachel.
Dave also left his handprint on the world as a potter. He began his pottery career in Chatham, NJ at Chatham Potters, where he met his wife, Janet. He then spent time working in Ohio at Hartstone and eventually moved to Cape Cod in 1983 where he began managing pottery shops. These included Cedar Swamp Stoneware, Olde Cape Cod Stoneware, Sugar Hill Pottery, and Chatham Pottery. He leaves behind a handmade trail of his life, through his art.
Dave was an exceptionally kind hearted, empathetic man with a huge sense of humor. He brought light and laughter to everyone who crossed his path. It was truly a rare moment if Dave was not singing or cracking a joke. His sensitivity and ability to be an ear for others was remarkable. Dave touched so many hearts during his lifetime and will be deeply missed by all.
Dave is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janet Gilmour; his son, Damien Gilmour; his daughter Rachel Rose Gilmour; and his sisters Cathy Harris and Diane Lloyd.
Memorial Visitation will take place from 10 - 11 AM with a Celebration of Life beginning at 11:15 AM at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, MA on Saturday, September 23, 2023.
