David Charles Harmon

David Charles Harmon, 54, of Eastham, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019. He was the son of the late Hoyt H. Harmon Jr., and Judith B. Harmon. He is survived by his mother Judy of Orleans, brother Bruce of Northborough, and sister Barbara of Orleans, and Ocala, FL.

David attended high school in Berwyn, PA, graduating in 1982, and then moving to Florida to attend college at FIT in Tampa. In 1984 he relocated to Fort Lauderdale to attend the Art Institute, where he studied graphic design and began to grow his vast network of fun-loving friends. After some time in Melbourne, he ended up in Jupiter where he lived for many years, working as a graphic designer for a small print company, and adventuring all over Florida and the Caribbean. Dave made his way back to the Cape in the late ’90’s, ending up at EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) where he worked for many years as manager of shipping. In this position he met many outdoor enthusiasts who sought him out specifically, for their equipment needs as he was clear and generous with knowledge. He also instructed beginners at EMS and elsewhere in kayak and paddle board. Concurrently, a fascination with all things tropical increased, and his intense study of Hawaiian and Polynesian culture resulted in his carving large and small Polynesian tikis, the demand for which he could not keep up with. He was always busy and entrenched in activities from the day he was born, and throughout his life, having difficulty finding time for all his passions. He played guitar with Randy and the Oak Trees around the outer Cape for a few years (though had always been a drummer), and the relationships acquired through this venue introduced the entire family into the local Cape music culture, and now includes them as friends.

One of the overwhelmingly numerous and kind notes, written by an old friend, reads:

“Dave was a happy, charismatic, super-talented, super-humble, hysterically funny, gifted artist, (drawing, painting, graphics, photography, wood & stone carving). He was a highly skilled drummer, keyboardist, bassist, electric and acoustic guitarist and song writer... ..He was also a true, seasoned waterman and lover of all creatures here on mother earth and within mother ocean...but most of all, he was a kind, caring, loyal son, loyal brother and loyal friend with a heart of gold. He will be missed, but never forgotten…there are far too many good times and adventures to reflect upon.”

The family is planning a beach celebration at Nauset Beach (Priscilla’s Landing) in Orleans for 12 noon, Sunday May 19. Anyone with an appreciation for the ocean is invited.
