Dorothy passed away on December 6th, 2021 at the age of 98. She was born on May 19th, 1993 in Philadelphia, Pa to Martin and Lilly Johnson Rouse. The Rouse’s were first generation immigrants from Dover, England. Dorothy had one brother Martin who she adored. The Rouses ultimately moved to Worchester, MA where Dorothy attended high school. Martin’s best friend, Roger Cross, took a shine to Dorothy and after World War II, they were married on November 6, 1948.
The couple spent the next 35 years moving across the country pursuing Roger’s career. They had two sons, Roger and David. With each move the young couple made (and the first being Connecticut to Seattle, WA) Dorothy adapted with her inner strength and outward friendliness. She became a model of how to fit into a new community, joining the church, volunteering for local causes and making new friends with each move. She was an avid reader and enjoyed recreational golf with her lady friends.
Dot and Roger ultimately retired to Orleans in 1986. They quickly became members of the Church of the Holy Spirit and spent many hours supporting its fundraisers. Dot worked at the church’s Galley West and took a part time position at Snows where she enjoyed helping customers find that special item. At this time her 3 loving grandchildren were incredibly fortunate to join her and Roger and spend their summers in Orleans. Many great memories for both grandparents and children were created, learning to sail and being treated to many Nana goodies, Dot was a great cook and baker! She had many fine friends and one of the highlights of her later years was her Monday bridge game. Winning that four-dollar prize made her week!
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Roger of 70 years. She leaves behind her sons Roger Cross Jr and wife Anne of Orleans MA, David Cross of Carlsbad CA, grandsons Matthew Cross and wife Carey, Kevin Cross and wife Heather and granddaughter Katie Freeman and husband Aaron. And last but not least Dorothy leaves 3 great grandchildren, Ruby, Patrick and Isla, a full and loving life. She will be sorely missed!
