Edward R. McGown Jr., 75, of Brewster, MA, passed away peacefully at home on November 26, 2024, after a long and hard-fought battle with multiple illnesses. He was born on July 29, 1949, in Leominster, MA, to Edward R. Sr. and Elizabeth McGown. “Russ”, as he was affectionately known, grew up in Clinton, MA, as the second of seven children. After graduating from Clinton High School in 1967, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Missouri and an MBA from Anna Maria College.
Russ was deeply committed to education throughout his career, working as a teacher, business administrator, and later as a disability program navigator and case manager for a medical and behavioral health center. He was an active member of the Orleans/Eastham Elks for several years as well as serving on the board of the Town of Brewster Council on Aging.
In 1980, Russ married Jane, his true companion and partner in life. Together, they raised three beautiful children: Gregory, Ryan, and Lauren, who brought endless love and joy to their home. Russ had a gift for connecting with people, making everyone feel instantly at ease with his warm, easygoing nature. He was an avid reader, often juggling several books at once, and found happiness in simple pleasures—whether it was sharing a meal with family, collecting coins, or relaxing on the beach at sunset with a cold drink and good friends.
Russ was predeceased by his parents, Edward R. Sr. and Elizabeth (Whalen) McGown. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane (Langevin) McGown, and children: Gregory McGown and his wife Susanna, Ryan McGown, Lauren Sherin and her husband Cole, and Shawn McGown. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brewster and Benna McGown, and Scarlett Sherin; his sisters, Susan Thompson, Nancy Wood, and Joan Kramer; his brothers, Michael McGown, Thomas McGown, and Eric McGown; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
His memorial visitation will be held Thursday, December 12, from 4:00-7:00 pm at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, December 13, at Our Lady of the Cape Church, 468 Stony Brook Rd., Brewster, with burial to follow at Brewster Cemetery, Lower Road, Brewster.
