Born June 14, 1935 in Gloversville, NY, she was the daughter of the late William Mortimer and Arbutus Wilson Mortimer, and the oldest of eight children.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bart DeRizzo. Sons, Stephen (Cathy) of Port Charlotte, FL, and Christopher (Barbara) of Wilton, NY. Their son Matthew, preceded her in death. She was a loving grandmother (nana) to her 6 grandchildren. Angela (Brown), Jeremy DeRizzo and Heather (Stoehr) of Texas and Jack DeRizzo of Washington, DC, Luke and Charles DeRizzo of Wilton, NY. Two great grandchildren; Hayden and Sutton. Brother in law Pat (Carole) DeRizzo of Palm City, FL.
Marilyn graduated Gloversville High School in 1952 and was the valedictorian of her class. She worked in various office positions. After marrying Bart in 1955, she was homemaker and loving mother to her sons. In 1981, she became a Real Estate broker for Realty USA in Rotterdam, NY. She loved her time spent as a volunteer reading to children in area schools and hospitals. Marilyn enjoyed traveling to Lake George and Maine in the summer. She was especially fond of spending time in Cape Cod, and in 1992 she and Bart moved there full time. She developed many friendships in the nearly 3 decades of living in Brewster and was loved by all who knew her.
Marilyn had many interests: antiquing, decorating, reading and medical research (especially complementary medicine). Marilyn was a lymphoma and breast cancer survivor and always felt indebted to the doctors, nurses, and caretakers that helped her beat the disease and allowed her to live for many years after her initial diagnosis. The family is especially grateful to Dr. Lee Nadler, whose bone marrow transplant in 1995 afforded her 25 more years of precious life.
Marilyn leaves behind two sisters; Kathe (Steve) Pavlus and Judy (Loren) Baker both of Gloversville, NY; one brother, Raymond (Bev) Mortimer of Seattle, WA. She was predeceased by her sisters Toni, Sue, Audrey, and brother Larry. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews and her dear longtime friend, Susan Burch of Huntington Beach, CA.
We would like to thank the staff at Cape Cod Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation facility for their kind and compassionate care. Due to Covid, there will be no public calling hours at this time. Marilyn will be laid to rest at Brewster Cemetery next to her beloved son, Matthew. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Dana Farber Cancer Institute. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com.
