Born on July 12, 1940, in Braintree, Massachusetts, Nancy was the daughter of Proctor and Mildred (Dunham) Murray. She was raised in Braintree and spent her summers on Beachpoint in Truro. She graduated from Braintree High School in 1958. Following graduation, she married Arthur Savonen and they moved to Quincy. After the untimely passing of her husband in 1966, she moved to Orleans with her three children, where she resided until her death.
In 1984 Nancy married William (Bill) Moore, who passed away in 2020. Together they created Fairwind Fabrics and made canvas covers for boats, seat cushions and canvas bags. They spent most of their time in Orleans, where they were active members of the Orleans Yacht Club, assisting with their many activities, and a portion of their winters sailing around the Bahamas.
Nancy enjoyed sewing, making stuffed animals for her grandchildren, quilting, cross stitch, and gardening. But her greatest passion was cooking, especially during the holidays. She worked at several local restaurants during the 70’s and 80’s, including The Brown Bag in Orleans, and Panda’s in Chatham. In 1979 she attended Cape Cod Community College and graduated from the Culinary Arts program.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents, her first husband, Arthur Savonen, and her husband William B. Moore, to whom she was married for 37 years. She is survived by her two brothers, Richard (Lucy) Murray, of New York, and David (Kathy) Murray, of Florida, her three children, Linda A. Weik, of Orleans, Douglas W. Savonen, of Orleans, and Stephen D. (Krista) Savonen, of Ukiah, California, and her three stepdaughter, Daine (Brad) Dodge, of Georgia, Susan (John) Mix, of Washington, DC. And Carol (Dave) Penfield, of Florida. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Joshua Weik, Tyler Savonen, Cody Savonen, Nathan Savonen, Camdon Dodge, Amy Constantin, Sam Mix and Peter Mix, and 6 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Kim Day and her wonderful caregivers at Greater Love Caregivers, for their assistance in caring for Nancy over the past 2 years and making it possible for her to remain at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 8th at the Orleans Yacht Club on Cove Road, in Orleans, from 2 – 4pm. Memorial donations in Nancy’s name may be made to VNA of Cape Cod Home Care and Hospice or to the Orleans Rescue Squad.
