Ruth Wallenfels Twombly died on December 7th, 2021 in her home in Orleans on Cape Cod Massachusetts. Ruth was born in Celle, Germany on March 4th 1930 to her parents Herman Wallenfels and Adelheid Auhagen. Ruth travelled back and forth between the US and Germany as a child, most notably being in Germany at 9 years old during the start of WWII and having to navigate travel home by herself. During her childhood, Ruth lived in New York and New Hampshire before marrying Everett “Pete” Twombly in 1954. The couple bought a home in Belmont Massachusetts where they raised their four children Joanne, Ken, Chris and Liz. Ruth attended the University of New Hampshire and Harvard, receiving a Master’s in Education and almost completing her doctorate degree before having her last child. Ruth was active in the community and was especially proud of her role in co-founding the Belmont Music School. Ruth was a “life master” in bridge, playing (and winning) into her 90’s. She was an athlete and adventurer, enjoying her favorite game of tennis as well as hiking and skiing. She was a lifelong learner devouring the classics, dense biographies and obscure financial texts. Ruth leaves behind her children and their spouses, her siblings Otto, Heidi and Hubie and her numerous nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her grandchildren Jason, Michael, Mark and Mia and her great grandchildren Carter, Troy and Caroline. She leaves behind her cousin Margaret and her relatives from Germany. She loved her family and friends and was loved by so many. She will be dearly missed. A celebration of life is scheduled for August 7th in Orleans Massachusetts and will also be available via Zoom.
