Terrence “Terry” Edward Sullivan, 86, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Known affectionately to his friends and family as Terry or Dad, he was most proudly “Boppy” to his nine grandchildren. He was charming, a true gentleman, and his sense of humor was one of a kind. He was goofy and quick witted with an infectious laugh. An incredibly hard worker dedicated to his profession, he was, above all, deeply committed to his family.
Terry came alive in nature. His lifelong adoration for water and swimming began as a young boy in Barrington, where he, his four siblings, and dozens of cousins spent their summers playing in the sun and waves until sundown. Naturally, it was while lifeguarding at The Dunes Club that he met Kathy (Sheehan), a moment so powerful they continued to revisit it throughout their 61 years of marriage.
Terry always felt a pull towards the mountains. Whether he was skiing, white-water rafting, hiking, fishing, or paddling his treasured blue canoe, he was at ease in the wilderness. For many years, Terry and his family enjoyed a condo at Sugarbush Mountain; he’d load everyone in the car and hit the road whenever the chance arose. While raising his family in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, he and Kathy spent their free time golfing at Point Judith Country Club and spending time with friends, but he was just as happy puttering around the yard, gardening, raking, and burning leaves in his outdoor fireplace.
His passion for the outdoors was coupled with an affinity for travel. He took tremendous pleasure in sharing the rewards of his hard work with his family, and his incredible blue eyes shined the brightest when he was whisking Kathy off to Europe at a moment's notice, or surprising the children with a ski trip to Austria on Christmas.
After graduating from Providence College, Terry proudly served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Battalion, 61st ADA, 2nd Infantry Division, serving as a Transportation Management Coordinator while stationed in Korea. Following his service, he became a well-known figure in the Rhode Island financial community. Recognized as a municipal finance expert and bond salesman, he spent decades in investment banking and brokerage at several institutions, including Fleet Bank, Carolan & Company, Roosevelt & Cross, and Salomon Smith Barney.
A man of deep conviction, Terry was on a lifelong mission to serve others and better himself. He was devoted to his faith and found profound peace on silent retreats, particularly at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert, New Mexico. His generosity was immense, but silent; he had no need for validation. He was a committed charitable giver to organizations such as the Diocese of Providence, Boston Children’s Hospital, American Heart Association, Parkinson’s Foundation and Veteran’s Association.
Terry’s commitment to service extended into his community. He served as President of the Municipal Bond Club of New York/Boston and served on the Board of Kent County Hospital. In retirement, he volunteered at the Council on Aging in Orleans, MA. He was active in the Providence College Alumni Association and shared his love for sports by coaching his son Scott’s youth hockey teams.
Retirement brought Terry to his happy place: East Orleans on Cape Cod. His cherished 1981 Jeep Scrambler was often seen rambling around town, blaring the Beach Boys or Ziggy Marley, packed tight with family on its way to Nauset Beach, Sundae School, or an Orleans Cardinals game. He and Kathy also stayed active in the golf community at Ocean Edge Golf Club and the many activities Orleans offered, their favorite being the weekly Saturday music series in town. As the day wound down, he’d voraciously read about Cape Cod, geography, history, birds, or the weather, all in which he held expert trivia knowledge. Alternatively, as a lifelong New England sports fan, if there was a Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, Patriots, or PC Friars game playing, he was cheering them on in a team sweatshirt.
His nine grandchildren: Emily, Ryan, Flora, Scarlett, Avery, Annika, Ashton, Parker, and Everly, were the center of his universe. The pride and keen interest he showed in their lives was a gift to witness. Even in his final days, the pure joy and love emanating from him upon hearing their voices was miraculous.
Terry is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy; his children: Meredith, Scott (Natalie), Allison (Adam), and Kate (Marek); his siblings, Cornelia (John), and Michael (Nadine); and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph and his mother, Flora; his sister, Sheila; and his brother, Brian.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, May 8th, at 12:30 PM at St. Joan of Arc 61 Canal Rd., Orleans, MA, with luncheon to follow. Burial will take place Saturday, May 9th, at 11 AM at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Terry’s memory may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation at parkinson.org.
