Dorothy E. Lusson, 88, passed away on November 28, 2018. Dorothy was born on February 10, 1930 in Passaic, New Jersey. She was the oldest of four children and only daughter of William and Edna Rhinehart. She graduated from Garfield High School in Garfield, New Jersey before attending college in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She then transferred to Stetson University in Deland, Florida and received her Bachelor’s degree in 1963 from Harris Teacher's College and then returned to Stetson many years later and received her Master’s Degree. Dorothy a retired teacher taught school both in Volusia County and in Flagler County. She was an active NEA member and was treasurer of Phi Delta Kappa from 1979-80. Dorothy is survived by her brother William Rhinehart (Beth) of Washington state; two children Jane Bowman of Jacksonville, Florida and son Jack Hassen of Port Orange and daughter-in-law Alice Hassen of Daytona Beach. She is also survived by her much loved grandchildren, Robert and William Bowman and Elliot and Trevor Hassen; plus many nieces and nephews. She much missed her son, Joe Hassen, who passed away in 2006. Throughout her life, Dorothy loved her involvement in church life and especially liked to sing. She attended Port Orange Church of the Nazarene and for many years was a member of Central Baptist Church in Daytona Beach.
Dorothy was a very giving and generous person who gave to multiple charities and her family throughout her lifetime. Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00PM on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home-Ormond Beach, 548 N. Nova Rd., Ormond Beach, FL. Family will receive friends at 1:00PM until service time on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the funeral home.
