Jean Doris Antil Young

Jean Doris Young was known as many things to many people. She was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew her best, Jean will be remembered as a very exceptional person.

Jean was born on April 9, 1928 at home in Courtice, Ontario. She was the daughter of Paul and Florence Antil.

Jean was raised with seven siblings. She had one brother, Bill and six sisters, Lorraine, Pauline, Joan, Betty, Shirley and Lois. Jean was usually involved in all sorts of activities with her siblings. She and her siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years.

As a young girl, Jean had a number of interests. Like most children, she enjoyed playing and making up games. She was curious about the world around her and was often eager to explore it. Jean was an active child who took part in baseball in Courtice and church group. Jean's memorable achievements included being an accomplished Tap Dancer while, in later years, teaching dance to young people in Sunderland. However, to Jean, the most fun to be had was simply playing and spending time with her family and friends.

A typical teenager, Jean had a happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. She graduated from Oshawa Collegiate and Vocational Institute. She enjoyed some classes more than others, having favourite subjects and teachers.

Always considered a “good” friend to those she knew, Jean enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during her lifetime. Throughout her life, she was very close with her sisters.

On April 10, 1948 Jean exchanged wedding vows with Robert William Young at her home in Courtice, Ontario. Empathic and loyal, Jean was committed to making her new family happy.

Jean was a devoted mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs. Jean was blessed with two sons, Ron and Jim. Another blessing for Jean was the gift of one grandson, Michael, two great grandchildren, Taylor and Ayden.

Fortunately, Jean enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Jean worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. She was co-owner of a grocery store, along with her husband, Bob, and served the public for many years, but her primary occupation was being a mother to her sons. Jean always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.

Jean enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favourite pursuits were gardening, going to the cottage and she loved to read.

Jean found pleasure in sports. She was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following her favourite events whenever she had the chance to do so. Tops on her list were hockey and baseball.

Throughout her life, Jean was a doer and was always actively involved in professional and community organizations. Throughout the years, Jean supported her husband who was an active member of the Lions Club and both Jean and her husband were enthusiastic volunteers with Kid's Village/Wish Foundation in Florida.

Jean was a woman who took pride in upholding her beliefs. So it is little wonder that she took an active role in her community, baking and serving at community events sponsored by the Lions Club of Sunderland.

Jean’s faith was important to her. She was a member of St. Andrews United Church in Sunderland for 25 years. During that time, she was involved in many church activities.

Jean enjoyed travelling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for her to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Favourite vacations included wintering in Florida for over 20 years.

When Jean’s retirement finally arrived she was well prepared. Her new life involved relocating to the cottage on the Trent Severn Waterway at Bolsover, Ontario. Even in retirement, Jean continued to stay in touch with her old friends while making plenty of new ones. Jean enjoyed entertaining at the cottage with family and friends, and, in particular, the cottage was a favorite place for her siblings to visit.

Jean passed away on March 13, 2016 after living with years of dementia, at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa, Ontario. She is survived by her sons, Ron (Joan) and Jim, grandson Mike (Leah), great granddaughter Taylor, great grandson Ayden, and her sisters Joan, Betty, Shirley and Lois. Services were held at Oshawa Funeral Home. Jean was laid to rest in Ebenezer Cemetery in Courtice, Ontario.

Simply stated, Jean was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Jean leaves behind her a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember Jean Doris Young.

Passed away at Hillsdale Estates, Oshawa on Sunday March 13th, 2016 at the age of 87. Beloved wife of the late Robert. Loving mother of Ron (Joan) and Jim. Lovingly remembered by her grandson Michael (Leah) and great-grandchildren Taylor and Ayden. Dear sister of Joan, Betty, Shirley and Lois and predeceased by Bill, Lorraine and Pauline. Jean will be resting at the OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West, Oshawa (905-721-1234) with visitation on Wednesday March 23rd from 10:00 am until time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
