Joseph Filipetto

23 February, 19335 May, 2021

After a battle with Parkinson's and dementia, Joseph Filipetto, 88, of Oshawa, Ontario, died on Wednesday, May 5th, 2021

He passed away comfortably in his favourite place, his home, with his "amour" Lucy close to his side. Nothing would have made him happier.

Joe, with his twin sister Pina, was born in Salvatronda, Veneto, Italy. He was the youngest and last surviving of seven siblings (Anselmo, Maria, Rino, Angelo and Amelia). At 18, he sailed for Canada and settled in Hamilton, Ontario with other members of his family and hometown “compari”.

When an opportunity of full time employment opened at General Motors Canada, he moved to Oshawa where he met his future wife Luciana Komel. They married in 1958 and had three children (Linda, John and Annette). Over the next 30+ years, he worked shifts at GMC, and for several years a weekly shift as a tenor in the St. Mary's of People Church choir. He saw his children through school and marriage (Graham Hoy, Mary Anne Palangio and Karsten Doose) then retired to put all his love into his grandchildren (Alanna Hoy, Cameron Hoy, Gillian Hoy, Kristian Doose, Olivia Doose and Grace Filipetto). He cherished his time with his grandchildren sharing his passions for and "self-proclaimed skills" in opera singing, soccer, Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, wine making, DIY home improvements and putting wheels on everything.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private funeral service will be held at Oshawa Funeral Home 847 King Street West. Please join us in celebrating Joe’s life via the livestream link

on Wednesday May 12th, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

Lucy, Linda, John and Annette:

Saddened to read about Joe. It seems not so long ago, but it was, I think 1984, that we were sitting in the Bressan's backyard discussing Italy's unfortunate result in the World Cup (they didn't win). Joe seemed to take personal responsibility for their losing. Passionate, loyal. Good characteristics to have.

Please take good care of each other,

Robert 'Bob' Weindorfer

Dear Lucy , Linda, John, and Annette and to all their families,
Our deepest condolances go out to all of you.
Lucy and Joe were our neighbors growing up and our Best Man and Matron of Honor when we got married 58 yrs ago. We will always remember his sense of humor and mostly his infectious smile and his love of soccer. A lovely man who will be truly missed by all.

Dear Lucy, Linda, John, Annette and families:

Our deepest sympathy to you and your family at this most difficult time.
I will always remember your dad as a great neighbour and friend to our family. There was never a time that he didn’t greet me with a friendly smile and shout out “Caterina” to make sure I saw him. He always made me laugh.
A great man that will be missed for sure.
We hope your memories will help you heal as time goes on.
