Paula Catherine Canapini

With hearts that are shattered beyond words, we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Paula Catherine (née Howard) Canapini, who left this world far too soon on July 15th, 2026, while spending time at our cherished family cottage in Sudbury, Ontario, a place where she was born, raised, and a place that holds a special piece of her heart. She peacefully drifted to sleep and never awoke, a gentle farewell to a life beautifully lived. Her final moments were surrounded by the beauty and comfort of the people and a place that meant so much to her, though our hearts were not ready to say goodbye.

Paula is the beloved wife and soulmate of Tony Canapini, whose love story was built on 41 years of marriage, unwavering commitment, laughter, and devotion. Together, Tony and Paula created a family that became the center of their world, filled with love, friendship, and countless memories.

She is the deeply loved mother of Catherine (Matt), Christine (Colin), and Matthew (Courtney). To her children, she was a constant source of unconditional love, strength, encouragement, and comfort. She celebrated every milestone, carried every burden alongside them, and loved with a depth that knew no limits.

Her greatest joy came in being “Gigi” to her grandchildren, Quinn, Ashton, Nora, Ryder, and Max. To them, she is pure magic. She filled their lives with adventures, warm embraces, endless laughter, traditions they will carry forever, and a love that made each grandchild feel like the center of her universe.

Paula is reunited with her predeceased beloved parents, Ray and Maureen Howard, and her treasured aunt, Kate O’Shaughnessy, whose love helped shape the remarkable woman she was. Left to cherish her memory are her devoted sister, Rebecca Martellacci (Luigi), her in-laws, Ernie and Wanda Canapini; her brother-in-law, Mike (Karen); and her sister-in-law, Jane (Henk).

She was an adored aunt to Joe (Kelsey), Julia (Chris), Gavin, and Myla, and a proud great-aunt to Lilah, Charlotte, Ben, and Summer. Family was more than just important to Paula, it was everything.

Paula possessed the rare and beautiful gift of making everyone she met feel like family. Her circle of friends stretched far and wide, and every relationship was warm and personal. She remembered birthdays, checked in without being asked, celebrated others’ joys, carried them through their sorrows, and made every person she encountered feel seen, heard, and deeply valued. Many who entered Paula’s life became family in every way that mattered, simply because that was how she loved.

After dedicating precious years to being a stay-at-home mom, Paula followed her passion for inspiring children and began a new chapter that led to a fulfilling career as a teacher with the Durham Catholic District School Board. She guided generations of students while building lasting friendships with colleagues, parents, and school communities alike. Teaching was never just her profession; it was her calling. She believed in every child who walked through her classroom, offered kindness without hesitation, and quietly changed countless lives simply by believing in people before they believed in themselves. She recently retired, finishing her career at St. James Catholic School in Ajax, Ontario, and was looking forward to her next adventures.

Paula’s faith was a source of comfort, strength, and love throughout her life. It guided the way she cared for everyone.

She embraced life wholeheartedly, finding joy in bringing people together, celebrating ordinary and extraordinary moments, and creating memories for those she loved to keep forever.

Paula had an extraordinary ability to create and maintain meaningful connections, carrying friendships across decades and distances with effortless grace.

She loved unselfishly, lived intentionally, and gave pieces of her heart away without ever running out of love.

Paula was a light to so many. In her absence the world feels quieter, colder, and undeniably dimmer. Yet, if we carry forward her compassion, her generosity, and her remarkable ability to make others feel deeply loved; her light will continue to shine through all of us.

Though we are left with heartbreak that words alone cannot express, we find comfort in knowing the love Paula gave so freely will never leave us. It will live on in her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her family, her friends, her colleagues, her students, and every life she touched.

Her passing leaves an immeasurable void, but she will remain a part of every tomorrow, carried gently in our hearts, until the day we are together again.

Visitation will be held at Oshawa Funeral Home at 847 King St W, Oshawa on Tuesday, July 28th, 2026, from 3:00–5:00 p.m. and 6:00–8:00 p.m. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church at 21 Bayly St E, Ajax followed by an Irish send-off in her honour, filled with music, food, drinks and laughter at BOND|ST EVENT CENTRE, at 44 Bond St E in Oshawa on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026, starting at 4:00 p.m.
