We know ourselves what it means when a loved one is taken from us. Death leaves a great and deep void. May God, the Lord, give you comfort to bear your grief.

Onkel Werner and the Canadian Kloke family will always hold a special place in my heart.

I spent two of my school summer vacations as an au pair—caring for Sarah and Joshua in 1992 and for Harrison in 1993 (sending greetings to all of you 🤗, I hope you are well!)—and on the weekends I always stayed with Tante Margret and Onkel Werner. Additionally, during my six-month work period at Lufthansa Toronto in 2001, I was also lucky to live with them for seven weeks until they helped me find my own appartment. 

I always felt incredibly welcome in their home in Scarborough. They made it easy for me to settle in and feel at home. Every weekend we went on sightseeing trips—to Niagara Falls, Roseneath, Ottawa, the Thousand Islands, a Blue Jays game, the German church—just to name a few.

There were countless small rituals that made those trips so special: stopping at a food truck for fries & onions on the way to Roseneath, or getting the little donut holes at Tim Horton’s. At that time Werner was thrilled with his new Volvo, especially the sound system, which he fondly called his “radio on wheels.” And in what felt like every city, he would point out skyscrapers where he had built the windows. After long days of sightseeing, driving home on the highway always ended with spotting the familiar telecom building they lovingly referred to as the “sign of home.”

 I also fondly remember his regular trips to the mall to get photos developed, and his excitement for new gadgets—those early big mobile phones, or the first digital cameras. Back in 2001, he was the only person I knew who already believed in them.

I will always remember Werner’s big, warm smile and how much he loved what he did—whether it was his family, his work at Fulton Windows, his passion for photography, or the way he spoke to complete strangers with genuine interest.

I will truly miss Uncle Werner and his heartfelt warmth.

When I think of Papa, I think of the cottage in Roseneath. I think of family gatherings in the summer with people sitting in old lawnchairs.   I also think of going to their home, where you enter and you are met with this warmth and excitement to see you. I can hear Papa's voice clearly, "It's so wonderful to see you" in his slow German-accented drawl, before he would eventually go on to tell me for the 20th time that Copenhagen means buying port in German (but I never tired of that story). I will miss you, Papa, and your warmth and sense of family. I will remember you only with fond memories.

Werner was a good friend of my parents, namely, Gertrude and Walter Hildebrandt who have also gone to their heavenly home.
He was always so friendly and outgoing whenever my family were visiting at Humbervale Park Baptist Church and usually had long conversations with my husband to discuss F1 and photography which they both were/are passionate about.   He was always interested in what was happening in our lives.
 I was able to accompany my Mother, on her Birthday on a  Church Senior's Trip to NOTL,  Niagara Falls and St. Catharines that Werner and Christa Gutsche had organized.  This was a 1st class trip that was so well organized at each stop and Mom had said it's always like this and the seniors were able to go on various trips throughout the years and go to explore different parts of Ontario.  The seniors were so thankful for the time and effort that was put into these trips.  The singing and general fellowship on the bus trips were so uplifting.  They generally always had "Kaffee und Kuchen" and that particular day, we stopped at a Mennonite Church which hosted the group and the minister at the church spoke to the group and acknowledged Mom on her special day.  It was a great time spending time with the seniors who I grew up with at Humbervale.   This trip was a special memory for me. Werner was instrumental in leading the Senior's group for so many years as well as the other roles he had at the church.  He was appreciated and loved by so many people.

The last time we met was a year before my father Emil's death in Hamburg in 2014.

Dear Uncle Werner,

After a long journey through life, you have now reached your final destination: the reunion with all your brothers (Emil, Willi, Alfred) and sisters (Elfriede and Emmie) in heaven. 

Your visits with Margarete to Germany were always a highlight for me as your nephew, as you were the proverbial "uncle from America". I will never forget that.

It was taken during a visit in Canada! Do you know what the three brothers had in common? They loved to take photos, they had numerous cameras in their possession, they had no problem to do small talk with unknown people and they all were strong believers in God.

It was Wilhelm's 90. birthday. He is situated in the middle of the picture, next to Christa, his wife. Wilhelm was Werner's eldest brother. He lived in Oberursel (Hesse), not far from Frankfurt. He died in 2018. With Werner the last of six siblings passed away.

Werner and Margaret 2005 in Monument Valley. It was an unforgettable journey together with Werner's nephew Helmut and his wife Ines which took part in the time the two of us were living in Oakville. We will always remember what we experienced in Arizona and in how many ways Werner and Margaret supported us in Canada.

My Dad, Theodor Schulze, worked with Werner Kloke for decades and knew him even longer.  They were good friends.  The photo is of the 2 of them at my parent's wedding in 1957.  Condolences to the Kloke family from the Schulze family.

I honestly can’t remember a time when Werner wasn’t a pillar at Humbervale Park Baptist Church. He was outgoing, genuinely friendly, and always truly interested in how you were doing. When he asked how you were, he really meant it.

He drove me to a few church board meetings as we both made the trek from “Scarberia” (as he liked to call it) to Etobicoke. During those drives, he spoke so fondly of his family and shared many wonderful memories. One that stands out is how much he loved driving in the snow — he said that some nights, after coming home from work, he would bundle his children into the car just to go for a drive in it. What a unique and joyful person he was!

Werner served the church and the German Seniors Group so faithfully, setting an example to everyone of faith in action. My heartfelt condolences to all his loved ones — what a blessing to have had him with you for 91 years.

I was very sad to hear about the passing of Werner Kloke today. He was a very good friend and brother in Christ. Werner was my  “Jungscharleiter” (boy scout leader) at the German Baptist Church 63 years ago. He gave freely of his time even taking us camping a few summers in a row. He was our boys’ first German church head coach in hockey in a church league and taught us many skills throughout the years. He shared and demonstrated God’s love in his time as our leader. Werner and I crossed paths throughout my teenage and young adult years as we attended and served at the same church. We ended up up serving on the Elder Board of the church. He and his wife Margarete, also served our Seniors faithfully for many years.  He fought the good fight and is now resting with the Lord. I am very thankful to have known Werner and very much appreciated his good humour and support.

I offer my condolences to Werner’s family and friends. I met Werner when I started at Fulton Windows as an estimator. Werner was a great mentor and more importantly a good person. Werner let my wife and I stay at his cottage near Rice Lake on a couple of occasions and even met us there to go over everything with us. He was a generous person and will be missed.

Dear Sarah Kloke and Family, 

We were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of your beloved father and grandparent.  While we didn’t have the privilege of knowing him personally, we do know how much he meant to you—and how extraordinary and impactful the life that he led was.  It’s clear he was not only incredibly talented and accomplished, but also someone who left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Please know that our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Losing someone so close is never easy, but we hope you find comfort in the memories you shared and the legacy he leaves behind.

Werner was my father in law for 44 and a half years, and he was a very good one. He was also the best grandfather to my children, Joshua & Sarah. I considered him to be my father, as I was so young when I joined the Kloke family. His love & support to my family will be dearly missed. May he Rest in Peace. Love you Dad xo
