In her 100th year, Mom passed peacefully with family by her side. Mom leaves behind her six children - Kathy Fraser (Wayne), Fran Carpenter, Peter (Judy) of Napanee, Carol Crabb of Victoria, Linda Cook (Dave, deceased) and Kevin (Suzy). Nan will also be lovingly remembered by her 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and her niece Pat Kemp, who was more like a daughter to her.
Mom came to Ottawa from Winnipeg in 1944 and served as a telecommunications operator as part of the war effort. After marrying in 1946 she and dad settled on a farm in Edwards where they raised 5 of their 6 children. After a move off the farm and the arrival of her last child in 1963, she returned to work as a telecommunications operator with the Department of Transport, retiring in 1987.
Mom had a good heart, a kind heart, a loving heart. She gave of herself looking after friends and loved ones in their times of need, helping with the grandchildren whenever she could, loving everyone unconditionally. Her ‘adopted’ family was expansive and covered the globe. For such a tiny person she made a huge impact. She will be sorely missed by all.
Thank you to the staff and residents of Windsor Park, especially her good friend, dining companion and past neighbour Rita Octeau, for her many happy years there.
If you wish to leave a donation in Mom’s memory, please consider the Ottawa Ostomy Support Group or Winchester District Memorial Hospital.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, ON. A memorial service in the chapel will follow at 11:00 AM . Reception to follow.
