Brendan Patrick Myers

Brendan was a complex and fabulous person with capacity to love and think deeply. His life was guided by a love for philosophy, wonder and spiritual thinking; passions he shared enthusiastically with anyone who would listen.

He felt very strongly in his convictions and often lead with his heart while talking about things like Socrates, history of the Celts, Christianity, politics, environmental ethics and what it meant to be a good man. He always had historical facts, dates and a mix of philosophical or spiritual documentation to back up his points, no matter the topic. Brendan was incredibly intelligent. He was also a great listener and asked just the right questions to lead a conversation, not afraid to challenge the other when he disagreed and ready to consider new ideas, within reason.

Brendan wrote over twenty-five books following themes of virtue, spirituality, the history of ideas, loneliness and science fiction. He was very proud of these accomplishments.

He loved nature and felt strongly about the environment, the ethics of preserving and appreciating it. Brendan fell in love with the outdoors in the Elora Gorge in his youth and took that passion with him through his travels to many countries where he always found a field or forest to ramble through. He prioritized exploring, loved hiking and a good viewpoint bench overlooking mountains or valleys. He had great tilley hats.

Brendan was a talented guitarist and singer, writing many songs of his own and covering his favourites from The Waterboys, Stan Rogers, The Beatles and many old Irish ballads. He loved playing with friends through the night and laughing with a pint or a whiskey.

His career led him to share his brilliance with others as a researcher and most prevalently as a Professor of Philosophy at CÉGEP Heritage College in Gatineau. A role he took very seriously and enjoyed immensely.

Brendan will be forever missed by his parents Robert and Linda Myers. He was the eldest brother of seven who loved him dearly; Nuala (Shawn), Niamh (Andy), Roisin (Bartek), Bridget, Ciaran (Angela) and Turlough (Krystal). He had sixteen nieces and nephews who will miss crazy Uncle Brendan and his unapologetic silliness. Brendan always referred to his oldest and best friend Greg (Pamela) as his brother and shared a beautiful friendship with him. These, along with large extended family, an impressive community of friends and colleagues, will be missing him together. Brendan is predeceased by his cousin Chris, Uncle Noel and four grandparents.

Visitation will be held on Saturday August 22nd from 1-3 at Racine, Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home at 180 Chemin Montreal Rd. in Ottawa

A following visitation will be held on Friday August 28th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Westmount Memorial Celebration Center at 1001 Ottawa St. S in Kitchener.

Funeral mass will take place at St. Peter’s Church in New Hamburg on Saturday August 29th at 10am at 144 Huron St. Followed by burial in Riverside Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Cardiac unit at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Hull Hospital for their excellent care, and Heritage CÉGEP for their support. Our family also extends our gratitude to everyone who has reached out with a kind word, food, offers to help and messages of love. They are all very appreciated.
