Doug was a great guy.  We shared lots of laughs and time together when we taught at Guttenburg School.  We had lost touch with each other but I have always had him in my thoughts.

I was very saddened by the news that DOUGLAS had passed. I reached out today, hoping we could meet up as it has been a while. I was his realtor and he was a very loyal client. We met Douglas some 20 years ago and right away we were taken by his insatiable love of life (joie de vivre).

Douglas had a passion for all things  beautiful and art in all its manifestations: music,  paintings and drawings,  sculpture and antiques.
He will  be missed by all as he was a fantastic host and a great company in conversations on all topics.  He was also greatly talented in configuring, restoring and coordinating decoration for all kinds of spaces.

Dianne and Carl: My deepest condolences on the passing of your brother, Doug. He was one of the most positive people I ever met and a true gentleman.

My condolences to Dianne and Carl.  I remember Doug as a kind and gentle soul who was a caring older brother always looking out for Dianne.  He will be missed by many.

Doug, my first cousin was seven days older than me. Although we lived10 miles apart, the Biehler family (our grandparents, their 7 children (our parents)) were close, so Doug and I got to play and bond together when we were young.
    After starting school, our bond was cemented. For eleven years we sat together on the school bus for 1.5 hours per day, played together at lunch hour and two recesses. In class, we tried to sit and work together.  Then for three more years, Doug and I plus Reid (Berndt) lived together in a one bedroom apartment in Ottawa. That was all fun, three close friends, three senses of humour, one cook (Doug) and two to clean-up.
    Then we went our separate ways, getting married, chasing a career, but only seeing each other at special family events etc. 
    However, a few years ago, Doug and I met at an event, then spent the afternoon and evening together, including supper. We were like mature schoolmates, reminiscing, talking, laughing, and really enjoying each other's company. It was "great". The past couple of years we had several nice phone calls together discussing our family histories
     Then last week, Doug "passed on". It shocked me -- I never thought of Doug "not being around". So I will try to be a good person so that I can meet and talk to Doug when it is my time "to pass on".

J'accueille avec tristesse le départ de Doug. Je suis un cousin de la famille Young. Je l'ai connu plus jeune. Je l'avais visité à Lahr en Allemagne alors qu'il était enseignant à la Gutenberg School, pour les enfants des militaires canadiens stationnés sur cette base.
C'était un homme affable, attentionné, quelqu'un qui avait le souci de l'autre et le sens du bien commun.
Je suis reconnaissant de l'avoir connu. Il aura laissé un héritage de bonté et la valeur d'être au service de l'éducation.

Doug was a gentle soul who wrote articles regularly for the St. Matthew’s quarterly newsletter, the Pulse of the Parish. He taught us much about the meaning of the decorative carvings around the church. 
He also knitted to keep his fingers nimble and created stuffed animals for two of my grandchildren, that they still treasure.

I am sorry to hear of Douglas' death.  He led me to St. Matthew's and I have found my spiritual home there after many years of searching.  For that I am eternally thankful.  I always admired Douglas' fierce determination to overcome his medical challenges and also to continue to learn and share that knowledge. The rhubarb that grows in my garden and provides joy for many people at church comes from Doug 30 years ago.  We will miss his contributions to the parish of St. Matthew's.  No doubt the family will share storied of how Douglas enriched their lives

So very sorry to hear of the passing of Doug. He was my grade 4 teacher at Charles H Hulse and became a close family friend. I have many great memories of times with Doug. Trips to Long Lake Lodge, a road trip to Vancouver, working together at E R Fisher’s clothing store to name a few. 

Doug was a kind and giving friend. He even lent me his yellow Dodge Colt, so I could take my date to  the Grade 13 prom.  I learned  how to drive a standard that night.  Later he purchased a red MG which he thoroughly enjoyed driving. 

He taught me life lessons that I will never forget.

Douglas was a long-time parishioner at St. Matthew's Anglican Church. A former member of St. Matthew’s Men & Boys’ Choir and a church warden, he was very involved with the church’s online store and online auction, by cataloguing donating items and enhancing their value through his research. The store also benefited from his invaluable restoration skills and extraordinary knowledge of antiques -- especially those with an Ottawa connection. We benefited from his enthusiasm and knowledge. He was a pretty cook cook too!

Douglas was my godfather - a very special soul who brought many special things into my life as a child: my first piano so I could fall in love with learning to play, my first charm bracelet so I would learn and remember the story of Jesus, and this, my first porcelain figurine so I could watch her happiness, and could fall asleep with sweet music in my ears. She is one of the most precious things I have from a more simple time, long ago. 

I will remember him as a kind and soft soul who spoke with such gentle interest, always wanting to learn about me and what brought me joy.
