It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Edith Cuddihey (née Coyle) at the age of 92. Loving mother to Alden (Sue Dupont), Karen (Robert Brown) and John. Proud Momma of her cherished grandchildren Devon (Laurel Kedrosky) and Hailey (Camille Crisostomo). Predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Albert Cuddihey, parents John Coyle and Jane (Jennie) (née McCambley), siblings Joe, Mary, Clarence, Helen (Nelson McLaughlin), Lima (Jack Plunkett), Anthony, Maureen (Gerald Murray), Jack (Helen Hayes), Eileen (Raymond McLaughlin) and George Canning. She is survived by her brother-in-law Lorne Cuddihey. She was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and her many, many friends.
While her death was sudden and unexpected, she left behind a legacy that comforts those who were lucky enough to know her…and of those, there were many. To say that she valued those relationships does not even begin to capture her essence.
Born on a farm in Venosta, QC, she was the youngest of 10 children who grew up in a loving home. Growing up on a farm meant she was tough as nails and never afraid to work. Her pies and jams were legendary. She lived life to the fullest, welcoming every change along the way – from the days of going to school by horse and sleigh in the winter (although she did quit after the first day of school!), to staying with Helen and Nelson while going to high school by train (for which she was forever grateful), to working in the city at the Bank of Canada for a year, to going to Teacher’s college, to navigating technology like her iPhone and FaceTime. She wasn’t afraid of any of it and was determined in all that she did. What never changed, was her love of going home to be with her family and friends. And with her own children, she made sure that they would be as connected as possible to both her family and Albert’s. If there was a connection that she made with you, she cherished it. And if you happened to send her a picture, even better!
She was the matriarch of her family and one might even say, of her community. After a career in teaching, where she never forgot anyone she taught, her retirement was a rich one filled with lots of travel with her beloved husband, Albert, and lots of time spent with family and friends. If she couldn’t see you, then a phone call was the next best thing.
She stayed active until the very end - still planting potatoes and flowers, enjoying a few rounds of golf, always baking, and only a few short weeks ago, visiting her dear Hailey in Calgary and getting a start on her Xmas shopping there and in Banff. To say she will be missed is an understatement. To have known Edith is to have loved her.
We want to thank the staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for their tender care. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m at McEvoy and Shields - 1411 Hunt Club Rd, Ottawa, ON. K1V 1A6.
