Died in his sleep peacefully as he wished on November 17, 2011 at his home at the Alta Vista Manor in Ottawa, Ontario. Husband of 57 years to the late Elizabeth (Betty) Blight (2005). Dad to sons Laurence (Sheilagh) and Stephen (Anna). Loving Grandfather to Elizabeth, Alexander and Colin. Brother to the late Mary Handley (Geoff), the late Andrew (Ruth) and Gillian Beardow (Derek), all of England. Uncle to several nieces and nephews in both England and Montreal. Dad was born in Derby, England, left home and joined the Royal Air Force at age sixteen. He was his own man for the next seventy-four years. He served around the world throughout WWII and moved to Canada in 1947 to join our mother Betty, get married and raise his family. Our family was raised in Lachine, Quebec where Dad and Mom resided for more than 50 years. Dad managed to earn a hard won Bachelor of Commerce Degree at Sir George Williams University at night over a period of eight years, while working full time at Kraft Foods in Montreal in Production Management. He retired in 1986. Dad served for years as a volunteer driver with the Volunteer Driver Bureau in West Island Montreal and was a long time Director of the Western Lachine Recreation Association and the Western Lachine Swimming Club. He loved classical music and doing crossword puzzles until the very end. Many thanks to the staff at the Alta Vista Manor in Ottawa where he resided for seven years and received excellent care throughout his life there and especially during his final days. The family will receive friends at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home and Chapel, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road), Ottawa, Saturday, November 26, 2011 after 2 pm followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations to the Canadian Lung Association or another charity of your choice would be appreciated.
