We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Joan Evans, daughter of the late Annie and Nelson Evans of Botwood, NL, who passed away peacefully on Monday, 17 November 2025, after a brief illness with cancer.
Joan was predeceased by her sister Daphne (Toronto) and is lovingly remembered by her sisters June Dickson (Toronto), Doris Duke (Austin, TX), Geri Reamer (Lantzville, BC), and brother Jim (Linda) of Brighton, ON. She will be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of cherished friends across Canada and beyond.
A graduate of Grace Hospital, St. John’s, NL (Class of 1964), Joan spent 23 dedicated years in nursing—most notably in Hemodialysis at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto. In 1987, she embraced a new adventure, becoming Senior Client Services Representative for McDonnell Health Systems at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus. Later, she served as Academic Administrator at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, retiring in 2001.
Joan lived life to the fullest. A passionate traveler, she explored the world not as a tourist but as an adventurer—most memorably on her two-year solo journey around the globe (1972–74). Her 2014 Antarctic expedition was a dream fulfilled, where she delighted in the company of penguins and the pristine beauty of the ice.
Her energy and enthusiasm were boundless. Joan’s friendships ran deep, and she brought joy and laughter wherever she went. She was a long-time and active member of Probus Alta Vista, CFUW (Canadian Federation of University Women), RTA (Rideau Trail Association), and IFDO (International Folkdancers of Ottawa).
Equally generous with her time, Joan volunteered for many years with the Ottawa Chamber Festival, Ottawa Jazz Festival, and the Bruce Dennison Bone Marrow Society. One of her proudest experiences was serving as a Special Events Hostess at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
Joan will be remembered for her upbeat spirit, warm heart, curiosity about the world, and zest for living each day with purpose and fun.
As per Joan’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service, but a time of visitation and remembrance will be held on Sunday, November 23rd, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa. Words of Remembrance to begin at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2345 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa K1H7M6. Please specify for Ukrainian Fund.
