Marta Kanigan

Marta was predeceased by her parents Olga and Edgars Jaunzemis and by her sisters Biruta Krumins (Janis) and Arija. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Greig Birchfield, her beautiful children Chris (Holly) and Stephanie (Evan) and her grandchildren Labrencis (LB), Bronya, Aija, Katija, Tija, Harrison and Zoe.

Marta was born in Germany and came to Canada in 1949 with her mother and sisters, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax after a harrowing voyage across the Atlantic. Then on to Kinburn Ontario, reuniting with Edgars, and finally settling in Ottawa.

Marta was employed at Revenue Canada and then at Statistics Canada for almost thirty years, with Census , Health and Demographic, Divisions, where she enjoyed a fulfilling career – a well-liked and valuable employee.

Marta and Greig enjoyed travelling, especially visits to New York City, Chicago and Boston and wonderful vacations in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Yukon. Also, two great trips across Canada, east to west and back through the United States.

We extend our sincere thanks to nurse Laura of the Geriatric wing of the Civic Hospital. Her kindness and cheerful professionalism during Marta’s final hours were very comforting to us.

Goodbye, my beautiful darling, Rest in peace. I miss you. Love, Greig
