OBITUARY

Raul Bilo Palces

31 March, 196723 April, 2021

Heaven gained another beautiful soul. Raul Palces passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital on Friday, April 23, 2021. Raul is survived by his wife Ma Theresa, and his children, Ralph Andrew, Ralph Stephen, and Julia Therese. Thoughts and prayers are offered to Raul and is remembered by his siblings Trijidia, Arilda, Disodado Jr., Lourdes, Archimedes, and Trinidad as well as his many nieces and nephews. Raul is the youngest among his siblings, in which they called him Ul or Aba which translated to English means Favorite. He was a strong, loving, hardworking and determined man who accomplished many great things in his life.

Raul is a true family man. He sacrificed a lot and went above and beyond to ensure his family had a good future. Raul left the Philippines in 2007, and started to pave his path in Canada keeping his family’s future in mind, but this also meant leaving his life back in his home country and long years of separation from his family and friends. Ma Theresa, his wife, shortly followed him to Canada to help support him. This resulted in the family unexpectedly separating for 6 long years until they finally got reunited only in 2013. The separation only grew the family’s love stronger. Along with his sacrifice, he was going through a much harder obstacle which he gave his all to fight. In 2002, Raul got diagnosed with a rare type of cancer which he fought for 19 years, though this definitely did not break his strong-willed nature, and if anything only made him stronger. He kept working amidst his illness, and supported his family no matter what.

After Raul’s admission to the hospital, his family ensured he was comfortable and took care of him, never leaving his bedside only leaving due to the restrictions of the pandemic. After exactly one week in the hospital, Raul passed away peacefully at around 2 AM and his family came as soon as they were notified. Raul was cared for by wonderful doctors and nurses in which the family can’t thank enough. The family is extremely grateful to all the hospital staff in their accomodation despite the pandemic, and by also allowing them to be by his side even for a few moments to pray for his soul. Raul received lots of prayers and support from countless amazing people, as he was a person whose faith in God was powerful.

His soul lives on to touch the hearts of those who are in awe of his hardwork and resilience, as he was also a respected and loving friend, uncle, brother, husband and father. His story and character has touched many, and he will always be a wonderful reminder to his family and those who knew him on how love motivates someone to keep fighting.

I always look up to him for everything he had accomplished, he never stoped trying his best to provide the best for his family. I will never forget his Infectious smile, that radiates to you even on bad days. I will never forget how he smiles every time you see him, he will greet you with that infectious smile that seems there is no problem in the world for him. Those corny tito jokes that even if its "Baduy" because on how he delivers it, he makes it so funny kaya "Benta"!

He is a loving man, hell make sure that he gets to provide everything that is good to you, and makes sure hell do something about it. Even after everything that has happened to him here he manages to provide a better life for his family, and for that i applaud him.

He always loves to drive, i will never forget those roadtrips we take everytime he sees me after school or on weekends. Even if its a client meeting he always asked me if i wanted to go with him for those drives. I accompany him everytime i'm free cause he gives those wonderful stories, he makes sure that those trips inside the car wont be boring.

Last time i saw him was 2016 when i came to visit them in canada, i told him that we will see each other again back in manila. I did not know that, that was the last time i will ever see that smile, or hear those jokes and hear those stories.

I will surely miss you uncle aba! Love you!

I still recall when you, Tere and I shared stories about our families, our jobs and our lives in the US and Canada. It was truly nice reconnecting with you and Tere. Lord Jesus, let your perpetual light shine upon Raul and may his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace... Amen!

Tere and family - Wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time...our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Uncle Aba,

The most jolly of them all. It’s been a pleasure being your nephew. As the years went by you’ve truly showed me how to be resilient.

From the moment you found out about your cancer & how your leg was supposed to be amputated you, more than anyone else, kept the faith. You continued to persevere in your life and thrive. I was left in awe.

I’ve silently admired how you are wired. I’ve always asked myself how, how can a person be so positive in this unfair, terrifying & unjust world despite what you’ve been through.

You were always the light of the room, never failed to crack a joke, make everyone smile and laugh.

You didn’t tell us what to do when life throws you bad lemons. Instead, you’ve shown us. You led by example. Know that you will never be forgotten, you have made your mark in my life. For that, I am forever grateful.

Clichè as it may sound, you’ve fought a good fight and you’ve done well in this life. Thank you for the lessons, the life-changing lessons, the laughter, the smiles and memories. I will treasure them dearly and I will miss you, Uncle!

Until we meet again.

To our dear uncle Aba

Thank you for the memories. We will never forget how you allowed us to enjoy life in the province, being all Manila born and raised.

We particularly enjoyed the weekend bondings and the crack of dawn luneta walks.

You will forever be in our hearts. Rest well Uncle. WE LOVE YOU!

Kuya Raul, we will always remember everytime you came here in Toronto due to work, you always slept over with us either by yourself or with Ate Tess and Julia

We will miss your sweet smile as your apple pies "pasalubong" to Paul and your chats with Patte and Leo about the NBA. It's too bad we cannot watch it live anymore in Scotiabank Arena because of pandemic and plus even the Covid 19 is over; you are no longer with us.

We know that your journey here on earth is over and that you are called to our eternal home in Heaven. Thank you for the well spent time with your family and to us the extended families.

We will surely miss you.
