On December 21st, 2014, the Winter Solstice, Shirley Ann was called to the Spirit World in her 71st year. Beloved Mother of Chantal (David Martin), Samantha and Natasha, and Mamanan (Granny) to Tawodi, MaryAnna and Elsa. Sister to Mel Daniels, and auntie to Sheri, Dane, Desmond and Dionne. Shirley joins her loved ones who left this world before her – father John Daniels, mother Mary Comegan, siblings Anna, Paddy and Joann Daniels and her grandchild Orion Penassay Martin. A resident of Ottawa since 1965, Shirley was born and raised in Lake of the Woods, Ontario; a member of the Anishinabeg of Naongashiing. As a poet and through her work and commitment to preserving her Ojibway dialect and heritage, Shirley leaves an invaluable linguistic and musical legacy to her family and home community. In Ojibway culture, the Winter Solstice marks the beginning of the story telling season and is a time to honour our ancestors.

Visitation on Sunday, December 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Traditional Ojibway service and burial on Monday, December 29 from 9am-2:30pm at Racine, Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home, 180 Montreal Road, Ottawa, Ontario and a community potluck feast at the Odawa Centre.
