Peacefully at home in his 80th year, surrounded by his loving family after a brief and very courageous battle with cancer. Survived by Janan, his devoted wife of 57 years. Cherished father of his 5 children: Gaith (Yen), Ann (Garnet), John (Tina), Joseph and Gita. Doting grandfather to Jessie and Zoe. Predeceased by his parents Hannah and Mary and his sisters Elham and Najat. He will be greatly missed by his brother George (Najwa) and many nieces and nephews. Souheil lived a full life in every sense. He was a leader to his family and to the Greater Syrian community. A founding member of many causes in the community and an inspiration to all who knew him and a friend to all.
He was born in Kfarhata, Lebanon in 1932 and was a graduate of the American University of Beirut. He emigrated from his country of birth to his adopted homeland Canada in 1956. A successful businessman and community leader, He assisted all newcomers from Lebanon who followed him to Canada. Everyone knew that one of the first places they needed to visit when they arrived was Cafe Laurier. There they would find a hot meal, encouraging words and, typically, their first job. His friends will recall a man who was passionate about politics and one who was a master in the art of debate. His most memorable refrain was that Canada was the best country in the world and with that no one could argue.
The family gives thanks to the many doctors and nurses at the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus), Elisabeth Bruyere Palliative Care and The Queensway-Carleton Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Glenwood Goss, Dr. Lisa Cross and Dr. Paul Hacker and nurses Beverley, Vladimir and Owe.
Friends and family may pay their respects at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Rd. at Albion Rd. on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Saint Elias Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral. Interment Beechwood Cemetery. In memoriam donations to Saint Elias Cathedral, Canadian Cancer Society, and Canadian Diabetes Society would be appreciated
