It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Daniel Holmes on March 30th 2026 at the age of 60. Steve grew up on the Holmes family farm in Wilson’s Corners, Québec, which boasts a history of over 175 years from when his great-grandparents arrived from Ireland in 1847. His heritage naturally fostered a love for Irish tunes, which he listened to on repeat during long plane rides and his excursions around the world. From the Caribbean to Europe and many places in between, some of his happiest moments were spent learning from locals about their history and culture. This included his bucket list trip to Ireland in the summer of 2025.
All who knew him described him as kind, humble, generous and friendly. He was able to make friends wherever he went, often making life long connections from simple conversations. This was facilitated by his renowned sense of humour, which has resulted in many memorable one-liners that those who have met him continue to use to this day and we are sure will continue to do so for years to come. He had a gift for making others feel special and valued by remembering both the big life events and the small things about them. This is evident in the vast social network he maintained throughout his life. He was incredibly proud of his career in the car business spanning over 40 years, but his proudest accomplishment was as a devoted husband to his wife Joanne and father to his daughter Jessica. Protecting and providing for his family were important values to him, which he did faithfully.
Steve is predeceased by his parents Ruggles Holmes & Doreen Clarey Holmes. He will be forever missed by his loving family; his wife Joanne Holmes and daughter Jessica Holmes (Peter Quigley), his siblings Mary Holmes (Bill Burke), Gerald Holmes (Janet Moore), and John Holmes, his nephews Daniel Holmes (Mary Ellen Gleeson), Jason Burke (Ariane Renaud), Patrick Holmes (Laurence Brossard), Sean Holmes (Catherine Rousseau), and William Holmes, as well as many beloved cousins, in-laws, extended family and friends.
Joanne and Jessica would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the team at Surrey Memorial Hospital for their empathetic and diligent care, especially Dr. Song and nurses Inder and Rayna.
At Steve's request there will be no visitation at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Patrick's Basilica, 220 Kent Street, Ottawa on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 10 am. Interment to follow at Ste-Elisabeth' s Cemetery, 47 Ste-Elisabeth Road, Cantley, Quebec.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Stephen’s memory may be made to the Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
