(Owner Southway Hotel)
Peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 with his family by his side, at the wonderful age of 90. Beloved husband of 65 years, of Louisa (nee Reichard). Much loved father of Fred (Karen), Linda, and Stephen (Leslie). Cherished Grandpa to Allison, Adam, Kristen, and Jennifer; Dylan, Kyla, Daryl and Patrick; Autumn, Della and great grandchildren; Maxtyn and Sylus.
Bill began his career as an electrician at the National Research Council and was part of the team at the Ottawa Airport wind tunnel testing site. Together, Bill and Louisa took over the family motel business and over the years transformed it into the Southway Hotel and Shallows Restaurant.
Bill was one of the founding members of Ottawa’s Tulip Festival and was a tireless contributor to his community and parish for decades – whether it be building skating rinks in Ottawa south end parks and schools or overseeing renovations at St. Patrick’s Basilica.
A personal family thank you to Dr. Leonard Bloom for his personal care, compassion and support.
Friends and family may pay their respects at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home 1411 Hunt Club Road at Albion Road on Wednesday April 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass Thursday at 10 am in Saint Patrick's Basilica, 220 Kent Street, Entombment Hope Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life at the Waterford, 2431 Bank Street. In memoriam donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute would be appreciated.
