Yvonne Gomes, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital on August 29, 2026, leaving behind a family who will forever cherish her love, warmth, and gentle spirit.
Born and raised in Sri Lanka, Yvonne came to Canada in 1981. She carried with her the values and traditions of her upbringing and built a life in Canada centered around family and caring for others.
Yvonne was a kind and loving woman whose warmth made people feel welcome and cared for. She was deeply nurturing and always willing to listen. Whether someone needed comfort, encouragement, or simply someone to talk to, Yvonne was there with patience and an open heart.
Family was at the center of Yvonne's life. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Kingsley, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage, and a loving mother to her daughter, Michelle (Alexis). She was an especially proud grandmother to Ava and Aiden, and treasured the time she spent with them. Their lives and accomplishments brought her tremendous joy, and being their grandmother was a role she held close to her heart.
Yvonne found happiness in simple things: she loved playing the piano and had a wonderful ability to play by ear, bringing music to life. She also loved cooking and working in her garden. She especially enjoyed visiting family and friends, these moments were precious to her and she valued the closeness and connection that came from simply being with the people she loved. Her home and her presence were places where family could gather, talk, laugh, and make memories.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her mother, Vivian, and father, Wilfred, as well as her brothers and sisters. Though she lost many of those who came before her, she leaves behind a loving family who will carry her memory forward.
Yvonne's life was defined by the love she gave to others. Her legacy will live on in the family she nurtured, the traditions she shared, the music she played, and the countless memories she created with those she loved.
Though she will be deeply missed, her love will remain a part of her family forever. Her family is deeply grateful to everyone who offered their support during her health challenges, with special thanks to her dedicated caregivers.
Friends and family are invited to gather at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home & Chapel (1411 Hunt Club Rd., Ottawa) on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026.
